According to statistics by the Ministry of Industry and Energy of the Russian Federation, Russia ranks 22nd in the world on furniture consumption. Imported furniture occupies about 60 % of the entire furniture market. According to the Russian State Customs Committee, furniture imports amounted to $319 million in 2006, which accounted for 47.3% of the nation's furniture market sales. The major consumers of imported furniture are situated in Moscow and St. Petersburg (70% of total imports). One of the challenges for foreign companies is the increase in custom duties by 30-35% for importing furniture to Russia, which is a result of the government’s efforts to support the Russian manufacturers. The support program includes decreasing the custom duties on import of furniture parts to be produced and assembled in Russia from 20% to 10%. Besides, there are no custom duties on some machinery and equipment for the use of producing furniture in Russia. However, a majority of sector experts believe that obsolete manufacturing equipment and the lack of modern technologies are major problems faced by local furniture manufacturers. Due to a lack of modern technologies many essential items are not produced in Russia at all. This includes almost all types of finishing materials, glues and adhesives.
