What is “Psychology”? • Science or study of behavior and mental processes • Applying scientific knowledge to promote human and animal welfare • Psychology is a “science” that practices scientific procedures and practices. • Evidence is valued over opinion and tradition. • What is meant by “behavior”? • Anything an organism does • What are “mental processes”? • Our private experiences?

  3. Psychology is FIRST a science! • Relies on EMPIRICAL DATA as source of knowledge • Relies on SCIENTIFIC METHOD • hypothesis testing and theories • operational definitions • systematic observations

  4. Psychology does not necessarily just mean “common sense” • Common sense and folklore may or may not be “true” • Science differs from folklore and tradition because it uses empirical method
