Franz was born on January 31, 1797 in Vienna, Austria. • Franz was never married which means he had no children.
His father was his biggest influence along with his older brother. • They taught him how to play the violin and the piano. Shortly after he learned to play the piano he was better than his brother ever was and he had been playing longer than Franz.
Because Franz was so good at playing the piano his father sent him to the Stadtkonvikt in Vienna where he met Antonio Salieri. • He left the Stadtkonvikt in 1813 to become a teacher. He then taught at his fathers school for three years. • During this time Franz wrote a lot of music. Antonio Salieri
Franz had composed two symphonies and between 200-300 songs. • He wrote some six hundred romantic songs as well as many operas, symphonies, and sonatas. • One of his masterpieces he had written at just 17 years old. It was titled Gretchen am Spinnrad.
Earning money was not something he was very good at. • In 1815 he met Franz Von Schober and he talked Schubert into leaving his job teaching and living with him to pursue his music career. • This made Schubert a free musician without a secure income. Franz Von Schober
Schubert then met a great singer, Johann Michael Vogl at the Schober home. • Together they formed the Schubertiads, which was a group of friends who met for the purpose of having fun. • While Schubert played the piano Vogl sang his songs. • In 1819 Schubert made his first tour with the singer Vogl. Johann Michael Vogl
Schubert then wrote an opera that was never produced while he was alive. • In 1823 he was considered a full grown composer. Not only was he writing songs but he was also a complete master of a full orchestra. • In 1823 he wrote one of his most famous works, the Rosamunde theme.
Franz major work include: • The unfinished Symphony • Die SchöneMüllerin • Winterreise • The great Symphony • Death and the Maiden
Death and the Maiden • The theme was seen in arts as well as it was in music. • The idea was supposed to lure people to death. • In 1994 death and the maiden was a drama film based on a play with Schubert’s music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoZJkkWX8Yw
He was diagnosed with Syphilis in 1822 and he battled with it until he passed away. • Franz died in his brothers apartment on November 19, 1828. • He was only 31 years old. • He requested to be buried next to Ludwig Van Beethovan. • In 1888 Schubert and Beethoven's graves were moved to the Zentralfriedhof where they are now next to Johann Strauss and Johannes Brahms.
