  3. Matt Salinger - Irony • Matt is the son of J.D. Salinger • Much irony in the life of Matt Salinger • Schooling - Matt attended prep school after his father had written a classic story (Catcher in the Rye) with anti-prep school views • Career - Despite the fact that his father was adamantly opposed to his classic story becoming a movie, Matt chose to become an actor

  6. Understanding Caulfield • Catcher and the Rye’s protagonist, Holden, and J.D. Salinger both experienced the war but from different perspectives • Holden and Salinger both attended prep school (Salinger attended Military school) • Holen and Salinger share the same internal conflict be it the need for “companionship” or escaping a dreaded fear, for example attention • They both hated Ivy League Schools • Both born to upper class parents from New York

Salinger's relationships • The women that Salinger falls for and are involved with often resembled the “fictional” women in his novels. • For example, Salinger dated than married Claire Douglas all around the same time the character Franny Glass was created. • Salinger had a tendency to be involved with women noticeably younger than himself, sometimes under the age of 18. • At the age of 34 Salinger began to escort teenage girls to school dances and sporting events. • Practically every relationship he was involved with a women of that age failed. Constant connections were made between the people and acts in Salinger's life and the ones in his novels. • For example, just as Holden wanted to protect Jane in Catcher of the Rye, Salinger wants to protect Joyce from fame and the outside world.

  8. No Movie for Catcher in the Rye • Catcher in the Rye was Salinger’s baby and he wanted the book to stand on its own merit • He felt that Holden Caulfield was a special character and that no actor would be able to accurately portray him • Salinger, sole owner of the rights to the story, included in his will that the book can never be made into a movie • Salinger uses Holden to express his views on the book not becoming a movie as evidence by one of the first pages in Catcher in the Rye: “If there’s one thing I hate, it’s the movies,” says Holden Caulfield. “Don’t even mention them to me.”
