INTRODUCTION • In a general sense the term “industry” is defined as follows: In this presentation our goal is to distinguish between three concepts related to the term “industry”: industrial automation, industrial control and industrial IT. Systematic Economic Activity that could be related to Manufacture/Service/ Trade.

  3. Industrial automation Automation The word “Automation” is derived from the two Greek words : Therefore it is the mechanism for systems that “move by itself”. However, apart from this original sense of the word, automated systems also achieve significantly superior performance than what is possible with manual systems, in terms of power, precision and speed of operation. “Auto”(self) “Matos” (moving)

So we can say: In general we can define the industrial automation by: Automation is the set of technologies that results in operation of machines and systems without significant human intervention and achieves performance superior to manual operation . Making products under the control of computers and programmable controllers.

To increasing productivity and reducing costs broader issues, such as increasing quality  and flexibility in the manufacturing process Currently, for manufacturing companies, the purpose of automation has shifted from  Examples of industrial automation: Manufacturing assembly lines ,machine tools (CNC machines) and robotic devices fall into this category.

  6. Industrial control a set of technologies that achieves desired patterns of variations of operational parameters and sequences for machines and systems by providing the input signals necessary. So Industrial control system (ICS) is a general term that encompasses several types of control systems, including supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, distributed control systems (DCS), and other smaller control system configurations such as skid-mounted programmable logic controllers (PLC) often found in the industrial sectors and critical infrastructures. In general the word control refers to:

ICSs are typically used in: industries such as electrical, water, oil and gas, data Based on information received from remote stations, automated or operator-driven supervisory commands can be pushed to remote station control devices, which are often referred to as field devices. Field devices control local operations such as opening and closing valves and breakers, collecting data from sensor systems, and monitoring the local environment for alarm conditions.

  8. Industrial IT It is the integration of automation and information systems across the business enterprise. it has multiple areas that include:

  9. Industrial IT (cont.) A. Industrial information systems are generally reactive, real-time and the computation not only has to be correct, but also must be produced in time. B. are considered mission-critical, in the sense that the malfunctioning can bring about catastrophic consequences in terms of loss of human life or property. there are some other distinguishing features of IT for the factory that differentiate it with its more ubiquitous counterparts that are used in offices and other business.

  11. Comparison(cont.) Automation Systems may include Control Systems but the reverse is true. Control Systems may be parts of Automation Systems. The main function of control systems is to ensure that outputs follow the set points. However, Automation Systems may have much more functionality, such as computing set points for control systems, monitoring system performance, plant startup or shutdown, job and equipment scheduling …etc.

  12. Comparison(cont) Industrial Automation makes extensive use of Information Technology. Industrial Automation is distinct from IT in the following senses : A. Industrial Automation also involves significant amount of hardware technologies, related to Instrumentation and Sensing, Actuation and Drives, Electronics for Signal Conditioning, Communication and Display, Embedded as well as Stand-alone Computing Systems… etc.

  13. Comparison(cont) B. As Industrial Automation systems grow more sophisticated in terms of the knowledge and algorithms their usage of IT increases dramatically. However, the lower level Automation Systems that only deal with individual or , at best, a group of machines, make less use of IT and more of hardware, electronics and embedded computing.
