  1. Your Class Binder This file of materials is a requirement of the class and must be brought to class daily!

  2. Basic Things First THE Binder You need a new 3-ring binder about 1½” to 2½ “ in depth for this class only Use a set of 6 or more dividers for the sections with tabs All clean notebook paper goes in the back, not between the dividers or in sections

  3. This is the type needed… Color doesn’t matter NOT a spiral nor a folder!!!

  4. Step One—The Skeleton Dem Bones! Part 1 • Place the dividers on the tabs • Insert labels or write on the tabs: • 1. Grading • 2. Notes • 3. Handouts • 4. Visuals • 5. Storage

  5. Continuing with the set-up… Yes. Behind the dividers!!! On the front of the first divider, glue, paste or tape the cover sheet For section 1, place the grading packet BEHIND the first divider For sections 2-5, place the tables of contents behind the divider for each one you’ve labeled for the section

  6. One more thing for Step 1: Spell out the month!!! Fill in the headings for each page neatly in INK In this class, you will write out the months in full for all headings, all of the time Each table of contents must have a complete heading

  7. Put only grading materials here, graded work goes in Section 5 This is a record of the grades earned and work for the class On to section 1—grading Grading Section

  9. Expectations A=90% and above B=80-89% C=70-79% D=60-69% (no honor/AP) F=59% and below Participation=10% Assignments=10% Tests=40% Miscellaneous=40% -Binder grades -Projects/Papers -Group Work -Extra Credit Yours? Mine? Ours!

Section 1 What to do RIGHT NOW What you WILL BE DOING Keeping track of the work assigned, grades and your efforts on a daily basis Checking the homework site http://amundsenhs.org for Classes/Homework to Social Sciences and then to the class name and period Devising a plan to improve your grade through increasing your grades and participation • Fill in all headings in INK • Read what it says under the title for explanations • Use today’s dates for headings and column 2 of page 1 (Table of Contents)

  11. Participation Be the inner nerd you are! You are not participating fully if you are not… On time, in uniform and wearing an ID Prepared with all materials Conscience and alert Cooperating Respectful of your co-inhabitants

  12. Assignments I will check to see that the work is done before class and it is done right! Homework folders for each chapter done before class in BLACK INK and corrected in class with a RED PEN Maps, charts and short writings Preparation for class activities Penalized 10 points per day late until the test is given, then zilch!

  13. Tests Oh, no! Short or long, they will be recorded here Makeup tests, quizzes, exams at 7 am in Room 216 the day following your absence from class—no other time Once the graded papers are returned, it’s too late

  14. Miscellaneous Grades Miss Who? There is no “late” for this part Group work is graded as it is presented and with the preparation pieces turned in after (initial your contributions) Substitutions are not allowed

  15. Rubrics Miss Ruby It’s an a grading thingy—a chart of descriptions for points Each kind of work has separate qualities and quantities The more accurate, creative, and thorough you are, the better your results

  16. Only handwritten notes here These are your writing in a style that works best for you Section 2—Notes NB-Note Bene (no-tayben-ay

  17. Section 2--Notes Note this! Table of Contents lists only what is in this section, i.e., handwritten notes The first page of each note requires the full 3-line heading (month spelled out) Each note begins on a fresh sheet of paper

  18. The Notes I don’t need to—I have a perfect..duh… Always write in INK Don’t copy every word, or even try it Make sure you can read them—works well for study and to connect ideas later Sketching to understand—Yes! Doodling—No!

  19. You must highlight these as you read and make notes in the margins Instructions on how to do something or readings Section 3—handouts Copies on the site!

  20. Section 3--References So, I just have to have them? NO! Table of Contents lists only this section Headings on the first page (total) Highlight salient (important) points and words Write in the margins (Cornell) Keep them in order!

  22. Section 4--Visuals My gallery Anticipation guides—guessing the answers before (in black) and correcting (in red) as you see videos Pictures—art, architecture, political cartoons are collected and numbered Maps are completed and stored for use and comparison

  24. Section 5—Storage Keep it! Returned papers, tests, assignments are recorded in Section 1, listed on the table of contents here Place the paper in the order of the Table of Contents behind it All papers in this section should have a grade

  25. Section 6—Clean Paper Clean It goes here—nowhere else Do not put clean paper in sections 1-5 for any reason Do not put used paper in section 6
