  2. Presentation to: COMPANY NAME Presented by: Paul Barrow Managing Director 11th April 2011 January 2010

  3. AGENDA • Brief History • Ethos • Profile • Sustainability Focus • Passivhaus History • Statistics • Green Base • Passivhaus Principles • Passivhaus Design • Summary

  4. BRIEF HISTORY Based in the North West, Paragon has been an established provider of high-quality construction services to both the public and private sectors for 31 years. We are firmly focused towards creating a greener future benefiting our clients, colleagues and communities in which we work.

  5. OUR ETHOS As an ethically-led sustainable business, our company’s ethos is simple; “to be environmentally responsible” “ to share a commitment to sustainability and environmental consideration” “to reduce our construction effects on global warming”

  6. OUR PROFILE • A fast growing, sustainable, highly motivated award winning contractor we possess all aspects of construction disciplines ‘In House’, including: • Construction & Civil Engineering • Electrical Services Engineering • Mechanical Services Engineering • Chartered Design Services

  7. SUSTAINABILITY FOCUS Our focus consists of: • Energy and C0² Emissions • Water conservation • Material use and design • Construction waste • Construction Management • Ecology • Health and wellbeing • Passivhaus

  8. PASSIVHAUS HISTORY • Since then around 20,000 Passivhaus projects have been completed world-wide, mostly in Germany and Austria. • The Passivhaus Standard is now the leading International Low-Energy Standard. • Passivhaus is a building concept that can be adopted by anyone! • In the late 1980’s Dr. Wolfgang Feist (Germany) and Prof. Bo Adamson (Sweden) developed the Passivhaus principles. • 1991 saw the first prototype successfully constructed in Germany. • In 1996 the Passivhaus Institute was created.

  9. PASSIVHAUS Paragon are members of the Passivhaus Trust and have considerable experience in delivering highly sustainable projects to Passivhaus Standard together with the Code for Sustainable Homes. In 2010 Paragon were commissioned by Helena Partnerships to deliver a Passivhaus Certified workspace and Community base in St.Helens namely “Green Base”.

  10. STATISTICS At the point of commencement the Green Base facility was only the 7th UK Passivhaus project to have been undertaken within a live site environment. There are around 20,000 Passivhaus buildings Worldwide and Passivhaus is now considered as the leading International Low-energy Standard.

  12. PASSIVHAUS PRINCIPLES • The term Passivhaus describes a specific energy performance concept of a building. Passivhaus optimises its thermal performance in such a way that it does not require a conventional heating system. The heating requirement is mainly covered by solar and internal heat gains. Energy losses are significantly reduced by the use of controlled ventilation to the living spaces combined with a high efficient heat recovery system. • The remaining energy requirement for heating is so little that it can be achieved by coupling a small heating device within the ventilation system to warm the supply air coming in. This system is known as ‘Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery’ (MVHR). The result is a comfortable temperature with an extremely low energy consumption.

  13. PASSIVHAUS PRINCIPLES • Passivhaus forms a consistent advancement of low-energy construction through careful planning, detailing and construction which is not restricted to specific types of buildings. All construction methods are Passivhaus suitable and can be realised with high efficient, high insulated thermal envelopes and mechanical ventilation and heat recovery (MVHR). • Other design factors that are taken into account include building orientation, triple glazed windows, air tightness, thermal bridging and specific procurement of domestic appliances.

  14. PASSIVHAUS DESIGN High levels of continuous insulation

  15. PASSIVHAUS DESIGN Minimal thermal bridging

  16. PASSIVHAUS DESIGN Continuous air barrier

  17. PASSIVHAUS DESIGN Controlled ventilation and heat recovery with MVHR.

  18. PASSIVHAUS DESIGN Maximise use of solar and internal heat gains & protect against overheating.

  19. SUMMARY • On 11th October 2010, The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne, has described the Passivhaus comfort and energy efficiency standard as “a watershed moment in our relationship with the built environment” and said he “would like to see every new home in the UK reach that standard.” • We at Paragon share his views… • Thank you for your time. With thanks to Passivhaus Trust
