  2. Durga Puja is celebrated when the Devi Durga, the consort of Mahadeva (Shiva), leaves her abode at Mount Kailash, on the day of Mahalaya, and visits her parents for a period of Four Days. The event is variously celebrated (for example, NavaRatri). Detailed preparations for the Pujas, gifts, good food, plans for get together sessions with friends - all these are the essence of the festive season of Durga Puja. There is a tradition of wearing new clothes during the puja. There is also a tradition that one has to give gifts to his or her relatives and in turn they too give them gifts. The puja gifts generally are new clothes, cards, Indian mithai and other gift items. All these are major components to uplift the spirit of festivity.
