Metro Atlanta Plug-in Electric Vehicle Readiness Task Force Atlanta’s Office of Sustainability and Clean Cities Atlanta created the Metro Atlanta Plug-in Electric Vehicle Readiness Task Force (MAPEVRTF) in March of 2010.It’s focus is to build a comprehensive infrastructure to consumers who become Electric Vehicles (EV) owners in Atlanta. The Task Force consists of local and state government entities, commercial EV interests, local utility companies, and the Clean Cities Atlanta coalition. In coordination with Clean Cities Atlanta, the City then began to identify and remove barriers to adoption that potential electric vehicle owners would face.
  3. Cities regularly meet, evaluate progress, and work with technical advisers to execute PEV readiness plans Raleigh/Triangle, Indianapolis, Portland, Denver, Houston, and Toronto all signed to be partner communities Working with partners to bring in ARRA Funding www.projectgetready.com
  4. MAPEVRTF Current Status Streamlined the City’s permitting processes for EV charging equipment in: single family residences, multi family residences and commercial areas. Initiated best practice research within the Urban Sustainability Directors Network, catalogued information throughout North America Developed an interactive webpage that outlines Atlanta centric plug-in electric vehicle information to begin education and outreach. Spurring the interest of Georgia’s University and College Students to develop strategies to build the demand for EVs in Atlanta www.wisdomofcrowds.emory.edu Positioned to partner with The Rocky Mountain Institute's Project Get Ready. Appointed a Champion to drive the MAPEVRTF, David Bennett, to maintain forward momentum.

EV Readiness Action Plan Secure $500,000 from DOE Clean Cities (Funding Opportunity Number DE-FOA-0000451) to develop local / regional plan to support the deployment of plug-in electric vehicles; Integrate strategies gained from the EV Case Competition; Market Atlanta’s electric vehicle readiness efforts to major employment centers; Secure collaboration and partnership with local businesses to match up to $500 to a commuter/employee help absorb the cost of installing electric vehicle charging equipment or deposit toward the purchase of an EV; Implement mechanisms to publicly recognize EV adopters (consumers that buy electric vehicles to operate in Atlanta and businesses that invest in electric transportation) to spur the next wave to join.
  8. EV Readiness Action Plan Gain input from Atlanta commuters, and stakeholders regarding the Metro Atlanta Region’s current and future transportation system. (Survey, focus groups, telephone surveys, comment cards, etc); Map the consumers that own EVs and their demand for electric vehicle charging equipment throughout Metro Atlanta; Promote the integration of renewable energy into EV charging infrastructure, by doing so with Atlanta’s initial EV charging equipment; Seek out foundations and thought leaders to fund an electric vehicle education center, similar to the Better Place education center in Tel Aviv and Copenhagen (for City to facilitate coordination with key political figures from across the State to electrify transportation); Establish a logo partnership with MAPEVRTF stakeholder group so the adoption of electric transportation is universally recognizable attracting additional consumers.

Estimated Consumer Cost for a US Auto Manufacture based on Renault – Better Place European Launch Better Place comprehensive services include: - Automated Battery Switching - Unlimited recharging and exchange of batteries at Better Place's national network - GPS, and 24/7 towing and roadside assistance Estimated cost for mileage plans: One-time $1,873 fee for a recharging unit to be installed in customer home 25,000 miles a year will cost $560 USD a month - 12,500 miles will cost $278-$348 USD a month

Help Identify and Address Barriers Through City Innovation, Learning, and Technical Adviser Assistance Permitting and installation of EV charging stations must be made safe, routine & predictable. Electric utilities must be comfortable with mechanism that assure EV charging will complement current consumer demand and power schedules (ie: time of day, on peak, off peak) Consumer perception that EVs viewed are overpriced and complicated

Potential EV owners need to see a supportive infrastructure to purchase an EV, so the MAPEVRTF plans to: Spur State Leadership by establishing Georgia State Senate Joint Committee to plan PEV charging corridors from Chattanooga to Atlanta and South throughout middle Georgia into Savannah. Focus on establishing pilots with Businesses in Atlanta to make EV infrastructure investments (Highlight Atlanta for Federal & corporate investment). Develop renewable energy technologies into Atlanta’s EV charging infrastructure as much as possible. Identify the consumer demand for EV charging infrastructure.
