Syllabus on Revolution and Revolutionary Movements • This course is designed to critically analyze revolutions, revolutionary movements, and to compare them in terms of their origins, rationale, methodologies, and degrees of success. All revolutions are unique, but there are some methodological and analytical tools with which to compare and contrast them. Most theories of revolution acknowledge that there are preceding revolutionary movements. • A Massive Infusion here on China and its revolutionary model (strategy and Tactics of Guerilla warfare, peasant based, agricultural basis) • A Massive Infusion on KOREA and its revolutionary resistance to Japan, in its anti-colonial movements, its student led movements etc… • North Korea’s revolution and its departures from the models, its persistence in a post communist world and its division from the South and how that effects the “revolutionary regime”

The Korean Revolutionary Movements • We will also examine the revolutionary movement that emerged in South Korea first in the March First Uprising that is viewed as a ‘a defining moment in the development of modern Korean national identity. • Then in 1919 Korean students and nationalists groups demonstrated for self-determination . Women played a crucial role in organizing female students. A full blown student Revolution came in April 1960, then in the Kwangju Democratization Movement (also known as the 518) demonstrations in May of 1980, and the reinvigorated April 19 Movement that resurfaced in the labor struggles there of the 1990’s. • The latter, along with the EZLN became part of the broader revolutionary movement officially bearing the name of the World Social Forum (but dubbed the “anti-globalization” movement by opponents and by the WTO, and the governments of the G-20 who represent a particular kind of globalization-a predatory capitalist globalization in which the decisions for the world’s six and a half billion plus are made by the heads of twenty nation-states). These revolutionary movements arguably contributed by contagion to the revolutions in the new millennium.
