  4. Size and Economic Impact • World’s largest industry – 235 million workers • US – 14 million workers • 2nd Largest employer • Generates $1 trillion in US economy • International visitors insert over $150 billion into US economy • Average international visitor spends $4,300 per visit

Industry Diversity • Small/Large businesses • Food/Lodging/entertainment/transportation • People • Serve guests from all over the world • Age, Culture, Religion, Special needs • Employees • May come from different countries • Languages, religions, abilities, level of education, culture • First time employees to retirees

  6. Industry Complexity • Made up of 5 segments • Hospitality refers to the entire industry • Includes: • Food • Lodging • Travel • Tourism • Recreation • Each business may include more than one segment

  7. Foodservice Industry • Consists of businesses that prepare food and beverages for customers • Casual to Fancy • Small to Large • May be located inside another business • Largest and most varied part of hospitality industry • Employs over 10 million people

Lodging Industry • Consists of businesses that provide overnight accommodations • Lodging – a place to sleep for one or more nights • Accommodations – a place to sleep • Expensive hotels to budget motels • Fit many price ranges • Almost 5 million guest rooms in 52,000 different properties in the US

Travel Industry • Consists of businesses that physically move travelers from one place to another • Car rentals, Taxi, Ferry, Airlines, Trains • From short distant to around the world • Historically, people traveled and stayed with family for a week – now shorter, more frequent trips are preferred

  11. Tourism Industry • Consists of businesses that organize and promote travel for business, leisure and other purposes • Travel agencies • Tour operators • Cruise companies • Meeting and convention planners • Convention and visitors bureaus • Travel and tourism offices

Tourism Industry cont. • Travel package – includes trip arrangements for several segments of the hospitality industry, one fee • Cities, States and Countries have offices that promote tourism • Print and internet ads • Websites • TV commercials • One of the most successful state advertising campaigns was developed in New York

Recreation Industry • Consists of providers of the activities for rest, relaxation, and enjoyment • Entertainment businesses – provide a show for you to watch • Spectator sports – sports you watch other people play • Participatory sports – sports you take part in • Attractions – temporary or permanent places of special interest to visit • Festivals, state fairs, National Parks
