The Ethnic Make Up of the USA and Representation (Facts and Figures Poster ) -30 mins • Create a USA Outline for your facts and figures poster (add on key facts and figures) • Turn to page 8 (Bennett) (see handout/map) • Copy the pie charts onto the a poster that show how the ethnic composition has changed. • Watch the short Video clip at: • How Ethnic Make Up has Changed in the USA BBC Video Clip • Note down the results onto your poster

  4. What is the Civil Rights Movement? (Worksheet and Notes -30 mins) • Grew in 1950’s in the aftermath of civil war • South had changed little, state laws still segregated blacks and whites • Racism widespread • 1896 (Plessy v Ferguson) Allowed for segregation, as logn as receiving same education. Challenged in Brown v Board of Education in Topeka (1954) Overturned ‘equal but separate doctrine’. Court declared treatment ‘unequal’ • 1955 (Rosa Parks) Black woman arrested for refusing to move to black section of bus. • Grew into larger movement by Baptist Martin Luther King & Picketing Boycotts • Setting for Famous Speech. • Martin Luther King 'I Have a Dream Speech' • Finally passed civil rights legislation under President L B Johnson

This effective, peaceful movement changed to violent protests and radicalism in 1960’s/1970’s (In cities) • Riots sparked by assassination of M Luther King 1968. • Been a battle between peaceful and violent protest • More recently: Jesse Jackson, malcolm X and Louis Farrakhan leaders (nation of Islam)-radical approach to civil rights (critical of peaceful movement) • Barack Obama • Clinton Era: Jesse Jacksons Rainbow Coalition , special envoy to Africa under Clinton • Obama: Two ethnic minority women to supreme court • Record numbers of ethnic minority and women voted for Obama in 2008/2012 • * However, Annie Lowry of NY Times has found ‘ Obamas inner circle are still all men. No change from the Clinton era’

How effective have the Civil Rights Movement been? • Rev Jeremiah Wright, 2008 after attacks in 9/11 commented that ‘ USA has supported state terrorism against Palestinians and Black South Africans, hypocritical and not representative’ • David Mckay (2009): Obama represents a new era for ethnic minority representation in USA, but against backdrop of economic decline • Bernard Anderson (2013) (key Obama Supporter) Criticised approach : ‘Not enough attention to problems and inequality Black pop face’ (see article)
