  1. Choosing a Sound bite

    Creating a News Package
  2. What is a sound bite? A quotation for television or radio Adds the human element Primary source: person who witnessed the event or is an expert on the subject Secondary source: person or document that adds crucial information to the story
  3. What do you think? Best sound bites are OPINION or EMOTION-BASED sound bites Why? They tell the viewer something that the reporter cannot
  4. Steps for Selecting a Sound bite Watch the entire interview and log it Classify each sound bite as fact or opinion Determine a focus for your story Rank each OPINION/EMOTION based sound bite for sound quality, video quality and relevance to the story Determine how to summarize and incorporate into the story
  5. Step 1:Watch the interview and Log it We like to color My daddy comes and picks me up We like to play outside and get to run and we get to play superheroes like captain America I’ve got captain America on my shirt Favorite: because I can wear a Capt. America shirt to big boy school I have iron man and batman Favorite costume: batman to wear to my party Cause I pulled the string What else do you like? To go to school with the mask Coolest thing about iron man—he doesn’t wear a costume, he wears clothes
  6. Step 2: Classify each sound bite as fact or opinion Facts Reporter can summarize facts Most can be stated more concisely in narration Opinions Anything that the reporter CANNOT say for the source Some kind of emotion that is better said by your source
  7. Step 3: Determine a focus Eliminate the facts from the interview and see what is left Based on those sound bites, determine the focus for your story Conner’s story: Superheroes
  8. Step 4: Choose sound bites based on three qualities Sound quality Is there any noise in the background that makes it difficult to understand? Conner’s story: crying in the background could be distracting Video quality Is there anything going on in the background that would be distracting You can cover distracting elements with B-roll if necessary Relevance to the story Based on your focus, what are the best sound bites Conner’s story: “We get to play superheroes” AND “They save people to not get boo boos”
  9. Step 5: Write the Intro Create a sound bite intro based on the following criteria Where is the sound bite going to go in the story? What does the audience need to know just before the sound bite so that they can better understand it?
  10. Sound Bite Intros Place your sound bites in a logical storytelling order We like to play outside and get to run and we get to play superheroes like Captain America They save people to not get boo boos (Elliot) I love Conner Write these sound bites on a sheet of paper, leaving some room between them
  11. Writing a Sound Bite Intro Reword the sound bite into a more concise statement: “We like to play outside and get to run and we get to play superheroes like Captain America” Playtime is the favorite part of his day Consider the question that you asked as a way to help you introduce the answer
  12. Writing a Sound Bite Intro Reword the sound bite into a more concise statement: “They save people to not get boo boos” Dennis likes the security that superheroes provide After the first reference, use last name only
  13. Writing a Sound Bite Intro Reword the sound bite into a more concise statement: “I love Conner” And his little sister, Elliot, looks up to him in every way You don’t have to say exactly what is going to be said in the sound bite…leave a little mystery
  14. Practice
  15. Your Turn Watch your interview Log the sound bites Classify them as fact or opinion Eliminate the fact-based sound bites Rank the opinion-based sound based for sound quality, video quality and relevance to the story Choose the sound bites you will use in your story Write sound bite intros DUE TOMORROW at beginning of class!
