Timeline of events • 1927- Chinese civil war • 1940- US gave economic aid to Taiwan • 1949- Beijing fell to Communists • 1949- Nationalists flee to Taiwan • 1949- Chinese establish Peoples Republic of China • 1950- PRC sign treaty with USSR • 1954- China threatens Nationalists and bombs islands, US steps in and defends, hinting use of nuclear weapons- China backs down What did people think when we hinted to China the use of nuclear weapons?
