  4. What is Storm Water? • Rain events • Snow melt • Other surface runoff and drainage

  5. Where Does Storm Water Go In Our Community? • Travels over land • Carried through municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) • Discharges into Crum, Darby, Chester, Ridley, Naamans, Marcus Hook, Brandywine Creeks and their related tributaries.

  6. A “Point” of Confusion:Point Source vs. Nonpoint Source • POINT source • Travels through a pipe system • Regulated under permit program • NONPOINT source • Runoff that is not from a pipe • Addressed through voluntary programs

  7. Why is Storm Water a Problem? • Problem: Decrease in water quality of local streams that results in a negative impact to fish, wildlife and recreation. • Problem: Increase in water quantity in streams that can lead to flooding • Cause: Developed and disturbed land especially impervious surfaces

  8. Why is Storm Water a Problem? • Problem: Non-storm water discharges enter systems • Cause: Illegal discharges into storm sewers • Cause: Illegal connections or illegal dumping into stormdrains

What can you do to help prevent storm water pollution • NEVER dump anything down the storm drains • Use ferilizers sparingly • Direct downspouts away from paved surfaces • Pick up after your pets • Fix all car leaks • Wash your car at the car wash • Vegetate bare spots in your yard • Compost your yard waste
