  1. INSPIRATION OF THE BIBLE PART 2 OF OUR STUDY

  2. GOD GAVE THE WORDS • Revelation 19:9 These are the true SAYINGS (WORDS) of God. • Anything less than accepting EVERY word results in a “pick and choose” option. • Either the Bible is from God or it is a fraud, deceptive, and should not be trusted.

  3. GOD GAVE THE WORDS Exodus 24:8 And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, "This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words."

  4. GOD GAVE THE WORDS Deuteronomy 18:18-19 18 I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. 19 And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.

  5. GOD GAVE THE WORDS 2 Samuel 23:2 "The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue. Isaiah 51:16 a And I have put My words in your mouth; I have covered you with the shadow of My hand,

  6. GOD GAVE THE WORDS Isaiah 59:21 "As for Me," says the Lord, "this is My covenant with them: My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants' descendants," says the Lord, "from this time and forevermore."

  7. GOD GAVE THE WORDS Jeremiah 1:9 Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me: "Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. Jeremiah 30:4 Now these are the words that the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah.

  8. GOD GAVE THE WORDS Jeremiah 36:2 "Take a scroll of a book and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel, against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah even to this day. Ezekiel 3:4 Then He said to me: "Son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak with My words to them.

  9. GOD GAVE THE WORDS Zechariah 7:12 Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts. 1 Corinthians 2:4 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,

  10. THE WORDS ARE TRUE Revelation 19:9 These are the TRUE sayings (words) of God. God does not make mistakes. There are no errors in His revelation to man. His words are true, reliable and can be trusted.

  11. THE WORDS ARE TRUE Deuteronomy 18:21-22 21 And if you say in your heart, 'How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?'-- 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

  12. THE WORDS ARE TRUE Psalm 19:7-9 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; 8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

  13. THE WORDS ARE TRUE Psalm 33:4 For the word of the Lord is right, And all His work is done in truth. Psalm 119:160 The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever. John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

  14. THE WORDS ARE TRUE Romans 3:4 Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: "That You may be justified in Your words, And may overcome when You are judged." Titus 1:2 in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,

  15. THE WORDS ARE TRUE Hebrews 6:18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. Revelation 21:5 Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful."

  16. OBJECTIONS 1 - Inspiration violates free will • God has the ability to work through people without violating their free will • Proverbs 21:1 The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.

  17. OBJECTIONS 2 – What about contradictions in the Bible ? • There are many “alleged” contradictions • These have been answered over and over

  18. OBJECTIONS 3 – Manuscript evidence does not support inerrancy • Simple choice – the original manuscripts are from God - • OR – they are not from God. • If they are not from God, they are a fraud.

  19. OBJECTIONS 4 – Inspiration applies to scripture, not the people • God can work through things, events or people • God can use people to follow His direction • Inspiration describes the process ; not the end product

  20. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Define the word Greek – God breathed English – God breathed in

  21. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Theories I Reject 1 – Naturalistic • To naturally get an idea • Like any author, poet, or artist • Some idea or thought might “inspire” me to write a book • PROBLEM – This eliminates God's involvement

  22. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Theories I Reject 2 – Mechanical • Man was just God's dictation machine • PROBLEM – This eliminates the individual vocabulary, style, logic and background of each writer

  23. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Theories I Reject 2 – Mechanical • Paul – deep thinker, logic, long sentences, big words • Peter – short sentences, small words, less vocabulary • Paul 5.2 letters per word ; Peter uses 4.1 letters per word

  24. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Theories I Reject 2 – Mechanical • Dr. Luke uses medical terms • Matthew uses Jewish time, coins, measurements • Mark uses Roman time, coins, measurements • Luke uses Greek time, coins, measurements

  25. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Theories I Reject 3 – Dynamic / Nomatical • The idea or thought came from God, but man choose the words to express that idea • PROBLEMS • Inspiration does not include understanding or acceptance • Peter – Pentecost – Cornelius – Galatians 2

  26. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Theories I Reject 3 – Dynamic / Nomatical • PROBLEMS • 1 Peter 1:10-11 10 Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, 11 searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

  27. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Theories I Reject 3 – Dynamic / Nomatical • PROBLEMS • Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ.

  28. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Theories I Reject 3 – Dynamic / Nomatical • Hebrews 7:12 12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law. 13 For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has officiated at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.

  29. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Theories I Reject 4 – Encounter • The inspiration is in the reader as the words inspire them to believe or obey • PROBLEM – This removes God from inspiration • PROBLEM – It allows anyone to interpret a passage any way they want to

  30. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION Theories I Reject 4 – Encounter • Prove it is OK for women to smoke • Genesis 24:64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. (KJV) • Prove women should not wear their hair up in a bun Matthew 24:17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: (KJV)

  31. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION God guided man in the thought to be expressed and chose from that man's vocabulary, style, and logic the words to express that idea.

  32. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION Matthew 10:19-20 19 But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

  33. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION Luke 12:11 Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer (thoughts, ideas), or what you should say (words).

  34. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION Luke 21:14-15 14 Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; 15 for I will give you a mouth (words) and wisdom (thoughts) which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.

  35. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION Jeremiah 36:6 You go, therefore, and read from the scroll which you have written at my instruction, the words of the Lord, in the hearing of the people in the Lord's house on the day of fasting. And you shall also read them in the hearing of all Judah who come from their cities.

  36. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION 1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." • Not naturally known or understood • Here is the mind of God

  37. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION 1 Corinthians 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. • God opened the curtain • God reveals His mind to us

  38. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION 1 Corinthians 2:11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. • We are not mind readers • We would not know until God reveals it to us

  39. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION 1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. • Bible is not from this world • God wants us to know

  40. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION 1 Corinthians 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. • Here is verbal inspiration • ASV – comparing spiritual things with spiritual words

  41. THEORIES OF INSPIRATION VERBAL / PLENARY INSPIRATION 1 Corinthians 2:13 • The thoughts and ideas are God's • The very words to express that idea are also God's God guided man in the thought to be expressed and chose from that man's vocabulary, style, and logic the words to express that idea.
