General - construction Example of stepwise approach: constructability • digging under protection of freezing (URL) • reconnaissance works in virgin clay (small diameter) • extrapolation to larger diameters and practical demonstration (test drift - MINE-BY test) • study of the interaction clay/lining considering • Concrete/shotcrete • cast-iron • sliding steel ribs (Andra) • study of hydro-mechanical disturbances (CLIPEX) • Study of the EDZ: fractures and self-healing (SELFRAC)
Experiments first generation • MIGRATION processes, requiring the development of piezometer, using sintered metal filters • CORROSION mechanisms (glass, metal) • Heater test, requiring special attention for performance of heating elements and design studies (ATLAS) • Composition/performance of backfill/sealing materials (blocks, powder) e.g. BACCHUS and CACTUS* experiments • Water Chemistry in clays (ARCHIMEDE*) • Hydraulic transfer between clay and underground structures (PHEBUS*) (*) Andra projects
Experiments second generation Development of larger scale integrated experiments, e.g • CERBERUS (1988/1996): study of effect on the near-field behaviour of a COGEMA HLW-canister after 50 years cooling time (-sources) • Later on, 3-D migration experiments (RN, gas) – MEGAS, PROGRESS • More recently, CORALUS (glass), RESEAL (seal plug using clay pellets)
