  1. Aim: What were the major accomplishments of humans during the Paleolithic Age? • Do Now: Review questions • What is the period in history before writing existed called? Which scientists study this period? What do they use to learn what life was like? • Describe what human life was like during the Paleolithic Age.

  2. Early Paleolithic People were part of two groups: Homo Habilis and Homo Erectus. They lived from 2.5 million years ago to 200,00 years ago. Homo Habilis Homo Erectus

  3. A. Achievements of Homo Habilis and Homo Erectus • Made tools from wood and stone, including knife blades. • Invented fire • Learned how to make clothing from animal skins • Created a spoken language • By 100,000 years ago, people learned how to live in caves.

  4. II. 200,000 years ago, a new human group called the Homo Sapiens (“wise human beings”) appeared. There were two kinds of Homo Sapiens NeanderthalsCro-Magnon Man They become us!

Neanderthals • Found in Europe / SW Asia • Had thick bones, well-developed muscles, heavy foreheads; hunched over due to arthritis • First to: • Skilled hunters (used traps and pitfalls). • Great builders (made houses out of animals bones and skins) • Mysteriously died out around 30,000 years ago

  6. B. CroMagnon • Started in Africa → migrated all over Earth • Had more advanced tools than the Neanderthals, like the burin (chisel), razors, axes, rafts, bows and arrows. • Evidence of art: Used bones, ivory and shells to make necklaces, rings and statues. Created paintings on the walls of their caves. • They become modern man!
