  3. The Purpose of Presentation • Share Observations, Challenges, and Successes after Seven classes using: • Sapling Learning - Rice University OpenStax OER • Lumen – VCCS OER • Solicit and share ideas with other OER users • Encourage faculty to adopt and use OER P/F • Support VCCS’s Affordable Excellence/Z23 Observations, Challenges, and Successes OER

  6. OER Challenges Access requires a Device May necessitate Data Plan upgrade May require Broadband service at home Reading pages of Electronic Information Free Campus Access but Inconvenient Ability to read - Require Placement, Pre/Co requisites (Florida DE, 2011) Observations, Challenges, and Successes OER

  7. OER Successes Full Classes/enrollment Happy students based on initial surveys Course materials based on Topics, not Chapters Most Current Information and Course Materials Easier/Better engagement with students and incorporation of current events 5-10% increase in overall student success – grades and passing Observations, Challenges, and Successes OER

  8. SUMMARY Successful OER is impacted by several issues High Cost of Text books remain a concern Access to Devices and Connectivity remain Some institutions provide students with Devices Movement towards low cost Broadband service OER and Z-degrees moving global Ability to Read is essential to successful OER experience – pre/co requisites may be necessary Observations, Challenges, and Successes OER
