  2. Question 1 The root of a word is always the main part of the word, usually in the middle of a prefix and suffix. Example: Unexplainable What is the root word? Prefix? Suffix?

Question 2 Hyperbole - Extreme exaggeration to create an effect Example: “Here once the embattled farmers stood,And fired the shot heard round the world.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson Metaphor – Comparing two dissimilar items without the use of like or as Example: Life is a long, winding road. Simile – Comparing two unlike/dissimilar items using “like” or “as” Example: Oh my love is like a red, red rose. Personification – applying human characteristics to non-human elements. Example: The tree waved its arms in the breeze.

  4. Question 3 What is the author’s argument in How the Other Half Lives? The author’s argument is the point the author is trying to make throughout the selection. Ask yourself: What is the author really trying to say here?

  5. Question 4 What does the word destitution mean based on other words in the sentence? When you see the rest of the sentence on the post-test, look at the context clues to figure out what the word means!

  6. Question 5 • How is this passage best classified? A fiction (Fake; made up; not real) Bbiography (a person’s life story written by someone else) C book review (Criticizes or praises a book) Dessay (nonfiction; real; provides analysis or information)

  7. Question 6 What is the main idea of Paragraph 2? This is common sense, guys. GO BACK and read paragraph 2. Use process of elimination if your not sure.

Question 8 A dictionary – provides definitions of words Bthesaurus – provides synonyms for words C encyclopedia – provides facts about a topic, but usually it’s only permanent information, so there wouldn’t be any information that might change from year to year. Dalmanac - an annual publication containing a calendar for the coming year, the times of such events and phenomena as anniversaries, sunrises and sunsets, phases of the moon, tides, etc., and other statistical information and related topics.

A chronological order – Follows the normal order in time B cause and effect – Shows the cause and effect of a decision or event.
