Family Planning for Males
According to the World Health Organization, family planning for males is considered as a valuable and important issue addressing the reproductive and sexual health needs in men. Males should not be merely viewed as partners for females, rather as individuals who possess health care desires and concerns. There are different family planning methods for males which includes abstinence, outercourse, vasectomy, withdrawal and condoms usage. Of these, the most familiar methods are vasectomy and condom usage. Vasectomy is considered as the safest and permanent form of surgical sterilization in males. On the other hand, condoms usage prevents the transmission of HIV/AIDs and other sexually transmitted infections, reduces unsafe abortions, and reinforces people’s rights to determine the number and spacing of their children. Unlike the above methods, men can also prevent pregnancy by practicing fertility awareness based methods which helps to predict fertile and infertile times in one’s cycle. It is much safer and convenient to the mens. Promotion of family planning and ensuring access to preferred contraceptive methods for men and couples is essential in securing the protection and autonomy of men, more than the health and growth of communities. Scientists say judgment making on contraceptive use is the mutual responsibility of men and women. Effective growth and achievement of male participation in family planning initiatives must and should address barriers to men’s encouraging participation in reproductive healthiness, including addressing men's downbeat attitude about contraceptive services. Till date, family planning is still treated as woman’s responsibility in several parts of the world. This has banned men from being further involved in family decisions about fertility.
