A new Schiff base ligand has been synthesized through the condensation of amino penicillinic acid with o-nitrobenzyldehyde dissolved in absolute ethanol in alkaline medium. Metal complexes of the Schiff base have been synthesized from chloride salt of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) metal in the alcoholic medium. Different analytical and diagnostic techniques UV-Vis spectrum, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrum, (H,C) NMR spectrophotometry, magnetic susceptibility studies and molar conductivity have been used in the investigation of prepared compound properties and their proposed stereochemistry. The effectiveness of inhibitory compounds prepared was against tested four types of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus facials and Proteus mirabilis), which were isolated from different classes of ulcerative infections.

Cobalt(II), Nickel(II), Copper(II) complexes have been synthesized with newly synthesized biologically active ligand. The novel ligand has been synthesized by the condensation of 2-amino-4-methyl-5-carbethoxy-1,3-thiazole and 8-formyl-7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin. The probable structure of the complexes has been proposed on the basis of analytical and spectroscopic data (IR, UV-Vis, ESR, ESI-mass and TG-DTA). Electro chemical study of the complexes has also been recorded. The elemental analyses of the complexes confine to the stoichiometry of the type ML2.2H2O [M=Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II)]. The Schiff base and its metal(II) complexes have been screened for their antibacterial (Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi) and antifungal activity (Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus) by MIC method. The DNA cleavage is studied by agarose gel electrophoresis method.

Coordination of Tellurium(IV) with Schiff Base Derived from o-Vanillin and 3-Aminopyridine

Seven new organyltellurium(IV) complexes with monobasic ON bidentate Schiff base ligand have been synthesized. The Schiff base ligand (3-APY-{o-VanH}) was prepared by condensation of o-vanillin with 3-aminopyridine. The newly synthesized organyltellurium(IV) complexes and Schiff base have been characterized by elemental analyses, conductivity measurements, FTIR and 1H NMR spectral studies. The structure of the complexes obtained was confirmed by FT-IR and proton NMR which exhibited pentacoordinated tellurium centre having ?-trigonal bipyramidal geometry. Schiff base as well as their organyltellurium(IV) complexes were also evaluated for their antimicrobial activities in vitro against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes), Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) and fungii Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus clavatus.

Synthesis, characterization and antibacterial activity of Cu(II) and Fe(III) complexes of a new tridentate Schiff base l

Copper (II) and Iron (III) complexes of Schiff base ligand namely (Z)-3-hydroxy-4-((5-methylthiophen-2-yl) methyleneamino) benzoic acid derived from the condensation of 5-methyl-2-thiophene carboxaldehyde with 4- amino-3-hydroxy benzoic acid were synthesized. The Schiff base and its metal complexes were structurally characterized based on elemental analysis, molar conductance, IR, UV-Visible and EPR spectral and thermal (TGDTA) analyses. The FTIR spectra showed that the ligand is coordinated to the metal ions in a tridentate manner through azomethine nitrogen, thiophene sulphur and phenolic OH groups. The molar conductance measurements of the complexes in DMF showed non-electrolytic nature. From the EPR spectra an octahedral geometry has been proposed for Cu(II) complex. The synthesized Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes were screened for their biological activity against bacterial species, two Gram –ve bacteria (Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes) and one Gram ve bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). The activity data showed that the metal complexes are more potent /antibacterial than the parent Schiff base ligand. It has also been observed that concentration of compounds played an important role by increasing the degree of inhibition as the concentration increases.

A series of mononuclear Schiff base transition metal complexes of the type [ML1 L 2 ] (where, M = Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) ; L1= Schiff base ligand derived from o-hydroxyacetophenone and L-cysteine; L2 = ethylenediamine) have been synthesized and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, molar conductance and spectroscopic studies such as UV-Visible, FTIR and EPR. A square pyramidal geometry has been assigned based on the analyses. All the synthesized complexes and the Schiff base ligand were screened for their in vitro antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli and antifungal activities against Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium notatum by well diffusion method. In addition, the antioxidant and larvicidal activities were also done for all the metal complexes. The percentage of antioxidant scavenging activity and mortality of the larvicidal activity were also determined.

As a part of systematic investigation of synthesis, characterization and biological activity of several new 2-[(5- substituted amino-1H-indol-1-yl) methyl] quinazolin-4(3H)-one derivatives (7a-h) have been synthesized by series of reactions such as modified Niementowski synthesis, condensation, reduction and derivatization of amino quinazolinone ring system into schiff bases by aromatic aldehydes. The new synthesized compounds were characterized using IR, 1H NMR and Mass spectroscopy together with elemental analysis. All the synthesized products were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against E. Coli MTCC 443, P. Aeruginosa MTCC 1688, S. Aureus MTCC 96 and S. Pyogenus MTCC 442 and antifungal activity against A. Niger MTCC 282. Most of the synthesized compounds exhibited significant anti-bacterial activities.

In the present study, new Schiff bases were synthesized from condensation of cephradine and ceftriaxone with Terephthalaldehyde and their corresponding metal complexes with copper (II) have been synthesized. Assignment of Schiff bases and their copper complexes was performed by FT-IR, elemental analysis and H NMR analysis. Their antibacterial activity were assessed against several bacterial strains namely S. aureus, E. coli and P. aeruginosa. The antibacterial screening tests reveal that both Schiff bases and their copper complexes counterparts exhibited promising antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial species so that they are of improved antibacterial activity than the parent drugs.

The molar conductivity data show them to be non-electrolytes. The Schiff base behaves as tridentate dibasic ONS donor towards metal ions. Antibacterial activities of the ligand and its complexes have also been screened against various organisms and it is observed that the coordination of metal ions has pronounced effect on the bacterial activity of ligand.

Synthesis and thermokinetic behavior of schiff base transition metal complexes of [1-(5-chloro-2-hydroxyphenyl)ethanone-

The synthesis of a new Schiff base derived from 1-(5-chloro-2-hydroxyphenyl)ethanone with 2-chloropyridine-3- carboxamide and its coordination compounds with Cr(III), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) are described. The ligand and the complexes have been characterized on the basis of analytical, electrical conductance, molecular weight, IR and electronic spectra, magnetic susceptibility measurements and thermogravimetric analysis. The ligand acts as a tribasic. The isolated products are colored solids and are soluble in DMF and DMSO. The thermogravimetric study indicates all the complexes are stable up to 60-70oC. All the complexes show half decomposition temperature and various kinetic and thermodynamics parameters have been evaluated from thermal data. The similarity in the values of kinetic parameters indicates a common decomposition reaction mode in all the complexes. The thermal activation energy of all the complexes has been calculated by Freeman-Carroll and SharpWentworth methods.

Iron, cobalt, nickel and copper complexes of a Schiff base derived from o-phenylenediamine and 5- nitrosalicylaldehyde were synthesized and characterized using elemental analyses, molar conductance measurements, infrared and electronic absorption spectroscopy. Elemental analysis data suggest the stoichiometry to be 1:1 [M:L] ratio formation in all complexes. Comparison of the IR spectra of the Schiff base and the metal complexes indicate that the Schiff base functions as a tetradentate ligand coordinated to the metal via the N2O2 chromophore. The electronic spectra data support octahedral geometry for iron(III) and cobalt(II) complexes and square planar geometry for nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes. The antimicrobial activity of the Schiff base and the metal complexes against some clinically important bacteria, namely Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC2384), and Salmonella typhi (ATCC14028) show that the activity was dependent on the geometry of metal complex and nature of coordinated groups to metal ion.
