  2. Definition • A work or manner that blends a censorious attitude with humor and wit for improving human institutions or humanity.

  3. Purpose • To inspire a remodeling of subject • Addison’s statement of purpose: “To pass over a single foe to charge whole armies.” • To deal with general run of fools, knaves, frauds, etc., instead of criminals.

  4. Types of Satire • Horatian Gentle, urbane, smiling Aims to correct by broadly sympathetic laughter

  5. Juvenalian • Biting, bitter, angry satire • Points with contempt and indignation to the corruption of human beings and institutions.

  6. Devices of Satire • Exaggeration / Hyperbole May picture all politicians as corrupt • Understatement (a form of irony) • Sarcasm—tell the opposite of intended meaning
