    3. Behavior change is influenced or determined by the environment because environments value and reward certain behaviors. So, we begin with a basic assumption. Would you all agree that: read slide? Stated another way, would you agree that the way we act in todays society is different from how we/or people acted 20-30 years ago because our society is different or has changed? Allow for feedback/discussion.So, we begin with a basic assumption. Would you all agree that: read slide? 4. Overweight Children and Adolescents: NHANES Up until the mid-70s, childrens obesity rates were relatively stable, holding at about 5% of the total population (statistically speaking, a normal rate). Then, beginning in the early 80s, the rate began to increase and over the past 20-25 years has actually tripled. Currently, the national average is about 16%. So, what happened in the last 25 years to cause such a drastic increase in the obesity rate? (Receive input from the audience.) Well, youre right those (whatever they identified) factors have all contributed to the problem. Lets take a quick look at how much those and other factors have influenced our health behaviors. 5. To address the obesity problem we need to affect an environmental change to create an environment that teaches, reinforces and rewards physical activity and healthy eating habits (which is the premise of Coordinated School Health Programming). Knowing all of these things leads us to our 2nd assumption: Read slide. Basically, to create an environment in the school that does the opposite of what society does which is to support healthy dietary choices, provide opportunity for physical activity and to support doing physical activity, and reward that behavior. This is the foundation for what we mean when we say Coordinated School Health.Knowing all of these things leads us to our 2nd assumption: Read slide. 18. Goals of CATCH Eat Smart Provide students with tasty, healthy school meals Maintain required levels of essential nutrients and student participation Coordinate healthy messages with the rest of the school Note that sodium was a major focus of Eat Smart in the early 1990s when CATCH was implemented as a research study. At that time, reducing sodium was a major dietary focus. Since then, sodium has become less of a focus overall. We try to accomplish these objectives through a variety of ways that spread the message and reach the family to change some of those family norms. State before advancement to next slide - One of those ways is to simply raise awareness. The objectives for the Family component are fairly simple - review the objectives.
