  1. Elephant News January 14th –January 17th • This Week’s Studies: • This week we will: • study the sound of short “a” • study short “a” word families • study the sight word “are” and add it to our word wall • study addition during math • study the day and night sky during science • learn about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr during social studies • ***Please remember, to demonstrate mastery of letters, your child needs to know its name, write it, and use the sound. To demonstrate mastery of numbers, your child needs to know its name, write it, and show objects to match it. • To demonstrate mastery of sight words your child should be able to recognize the word in several different settings (alone, in sentences, or in books) • FYI • I will be out of town on Thursday, January 24th –Tuesday January 29th. I will be at school on Thursday until lunch time. Mrs. Ross will be in our classroom Thursday, Friday, and Monday and Mrs. Coldsnow will be in our classroom on Tuesday while I am away. They are both wonderful with the Elephants . Please send in any notes, change of transportation, etc. via note in your child’s folder and not by email as Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Coldsnow will not receive the information. I will be in Miami participating in my first half marathon . • There was a misprint on January’s homework log. “Thursday” should have been written instead of Friday; I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. • Please remember to sign in at the front office when you are on campus. • We will be studying short vowel word families this quarter. Word families are sets of rhyming words. The words cat, rat hat, bat are all in the “at” word family. READ! READ! READ! Every night for 20-30 minutes “Kindergarten teachers have always known that kids have to believe they can read before they can actually do it….” -Reggie Routman, from Reading Essentials • Important Dates • January 18th-Teacher Workday; No School • January 21st-Marting Luther, King Jr. Holiday; No School • January 24th-January 29th-Mrs. LaPointe out of town • January 25th-Homework journals not due until the following Friday February 1st • February 4th-100th Day of School • February 7th-Early Release Remember to save your box tops and soda tabs!
