Contribution to Archaeology at Pompeii • Maintained Fiorelli’sgrid technique of excavation. • One of his contributions to the restoration of Pompeii was his meticulous reconstructions of the upper storeys, windows, balconies and roofs of buildings lining the Via dell’Abbondanza. • After removing debris, he protected any furnishings or frescoes found within buildings and then shored up the walls to prevent them from collapsing when the street itself was cleared. • First person to use photography to document excavation
