  4. What is the Dewey Decimal System? • The Dewey Decimal Classification system, sometimes abbreviated DDC, is a method of organizing books in a library by subject matter. • It is a numerical system using groupings of ten — i.e. there are ten major classes , each of which has ten divisions, each of which has ten sections — and books are placed on the shelf in numerical order. • The call numbers in the Dewey Decimal system provide increasingly specific information about the book when read from left to right. • There are three numerals in each, followed by a decimal point, which may be followed by more numerals to more specifically categorize the book. The second line of the call number consists of the first few letters of the author's name, which may be used to alphabetize books with the same numerical classification.

  5. Dewey Who? • American librarian Melvil Dewey (1851-1931) invented his famous decimal classification system for books in 1876; • Before Dewey developed his classification system there was no uniform system used in libraries. This irked Dewey, who liked order and simplicity. He developed a way to classify books that would work for all libraries. Melvil Dewey well deserves to be considered the father of modern librarianship. Picture taken from Google Images-librarian.net:

  6. How is it Categorized? The 3 main categories of books include: • Fiction (Fake, Make believe, realistic fiction, etc.) • Non-fiction (Not fake, true information, can be proven to be true) • Reference (encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas, etc) • Can you match each picture to each category?

  7. How to use this system? The Call Number • The different topics in this system are assigned numbers, known as "call numbers”. The call number is a group of numbers or numbers and letters put together to tell you where to find your book on the shelf. • The second line of the call number consists of the first few letters of the author's name, which may be used to alphabetize books with the same numerical classification. • The call numberis located at the bottom of the book on the spine. The call number always has three numbers to the left of the decimal. Call Number Call Number Book Spine 796.332 FRI 536.5 OLI
