  1. Fifth Grade 2013-2014! Welcome to our classroom!

  2. So much information… • Service Hours • Website/Technology • Incentive Program • Goals for Life • Curriculum • Health • Need to ask a favor…

  3. Service Hours • In an effort to not only instill in our students the importance of Service Learning and Social Justice, but to also involve our community in the importance of a Catholic School Education, all 5th grade students will be required to complete 4 hours of community service this school year. • I will be providing one opportunity to complete up to the full 4 hours during each academic quarter. • Your student may choose to complete their hours at a location, time, and date of their (your) choosing.

  4. Website/Technology • Homework may change dates depending on how in class assessments end up. • I will try to update the website once a month with any important class information including any opportunities to do service hours. • There is a Google calendar embedded in the front page of the website, let me know if there are dates you would like to see added to that calendar for all to be aware of.

  5. Website/Technology • Remind101:This is a way for me to be able to send text message reminders and information to the entire class without a)clogging your inbox, and b)having everyone’s personal numbers. • You subscribe by sending a text message, you don’t need an account!

  6. Website/Technology • ThinkCentral: We have a new science curriculum which, along with the GoMath series, uses ThinkCentral.com. Each student has a login. Some assignments (science and math) will be given over this website and will need to be completed online. • Let me know if this is a problem for anyone and we can discuss an alternative.

  7. Website/Technology • ThreeRing: Digital Portfolios • Create an account for yourself and your child at ThreeRing.com • Make sure to use the e-mail address listed under “family” for the school to receive information about your child. • Get Student Code from me before leaving.

  8. Website/Technology • iPads! Students will be using the iPads throughout the school day. • Fact Practice for math • Grammar Practice for Writing • Research • Keeping a digital portfolio of work • Skyping with pen pal class in California • Creating multimedia presentations • Reading e-books • More and more to come

  9. Website/Technology • Senteo Devices: Students will be using these remote control type clickers to complete assessments and receive instant feedback. This also allows me to get instant feedback about objectives that need to be reviewed and groups that may need to be changed. • Reading Club: Order books from Scholastic anytime using our one time class activation code. L68DT • Other Websites: I will be working this year to add access to some resources that might be helpful for students to practice at home. Most of our textbook publishers have great websites with a digital path to go along with their paper resources. Take a look!

  10. Incentives • Whole Group • Marbles in the Jar • Individual • Stickers on a sticker chart • Consequences as positive AND negative • Every choice has a consequence, even as adults.

  11. Goals for Life • I can take good care of myself even if I am mad. • I can be productive and follow directions even if I don’t want to. • I can be okay, even when others are not okay.

  12. Curriculum • Standards available online at www.catholicschoolshartford.org under “Academics: Curriculum Standards” • The curriculum is laid out in the standards, quarter by quarter for some subjects. • Our schedule! • My schedule • I am going to be sharing the job of coordinating our after school program with Mrs. Keane. Because of this my after school availability is limited. I am always available to meet or provide extra help for students before school.

  13. Curriculum • Social/Emotional • Check-ins: Students complete a quick check-in every morning so that I know how they are doing. If you want to see your child’s check-ins so far, please ask after the presentation. • Logical Consequences: I will not take recess away from your child unless that is a consequence that MAKES SENSE with the behavior. • Trust: I want to create a community where there is mutual trust. This means teamwork on our part!

  14. Health • Part of our Science curriculum this year is a health class. • I want to encourage healthy habits. This means being physically active and fueling our bodies with healthy foods. • I will be rewarding healthy snacks with a sticker in class.

  15. Miscellaneous • Lunch/Snack • Uniform • Volunteering/Field Trips

  16. Favor(s) • I would like to put up some pictures of the class. I only have a few. If you have photos of the kiddos, especially group shots, and wouldn’t mind e-mailing them to me I would be very grateful! • Your child has written you a letter. It would mean a great deal to me and to them if you would take a few minutes to write them back. Let them know that you are proud and you believe in their ability to work hard and achieve their goals. Of course they know this but this letter will be re-read and re-viewed throughout the year whenever a student needs a little boost! So don’t be afraid to overdo it!

  17. Thank you! • For everything you do. • Questions?
