  8. Diegetic sound • Audio elements we SEE within the film frame (part of the story): • Dialogue • Footsteps • Car door • Etc.

  9. Synchronous • Simultaneous recording of sound and image • Realistic • Requires continuity between images

  10. Nonsynchronous • Used sound only selectively • Image might show one subject and sound might represent another • Edited –select audio • Dubbed-re-record voices • Montage – dialogue of one character overlaps with another

  13. Sound effects Atmospheric OR Add meaning Pitch • high-pitched = suspense, plot climax • low-frequency =dignity, solemnity, anxiety, mystery Volume • Loud = forceful, intense, threatening • Quiet = delicate, hesitant, weak Tempo • speed = tension

  17. Select the 5 most important from each the opening and closing. For each sound, list the relationship of that sound to the main themes of the movie. Example: SOUND Alarm goes off repeatedly RELATIONSHIP TO THEMES heightened sense of anxiety, pressed for time

  18. Rewrite your information in a grid format on large paper Present information to the class
