  1. What makes Polar Regions Extreme Environments By: Betty Mulat

  2. Altitudes of Polar Regions: • According to http://www.hpee.org/ : • Settings that possess extraordinary physical, psychological, and interpersonal demands that require significant human adaptation for survival and performance • Example environments include space, high-altitudes, Polar regions, deserts, underground, open ocean, and underwater. Furthermore, a number of extreme activities and occupations occur in these environments such as spaceflight, aviation, mountain hardening, military operations, firefighting, emergency services, search & rescue, hazardous materials handling, mining, diving, and a variety of extreme sports

  3. The climate at Polar Regions is also extreme. • According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_region • Polar region receive 1 radiation because the sun's energy arrives at an oblique angle, spreading over a larger area, and also travels a longer distance through the Earth's atmosphere in which it may be absorbed, scattered or reflected, which is the same thing that causes winters to be colder than the rest of the year in tempature areas.

  4. Midnight Sun • The axial tilt of the Earth has a major effect on climate of the Polar Regions. Since the Polar Regions are the farthest from the equator, they receive the least amount of sunlight and are therefore frigid. The large amount of ice and snow also reflects a large part of what little sunlight the Polar Regions receive, contributing to the cold. Polar regions are characterized by the polar climate , extremely cold temperatures, heavy glaciations wherever there is sufficient precipitation to form permanent ice, and extreme variations in daylight hours, with twenty-four hours of daylight in summer (the midnight sun), and complete darkness at mid-winter .

  5. The End. • All of this information concludes to the fact that Polar Regions are extreme enviorments.
