The Problem • Six facility instruments and one P.I. instrumet currently in use: IMACS, PANIC, MagIC, LDSS3, MIKE, MIKE fibers, POETS (P.I.) • Lots of instruments and two new foci coming: MagE, PFS (P.I.), FIRE, PISCO (P.I.), f/5, FourStar, Megacam (f/5), MMIRS (f/5), AO, MIRAC… • Not enough places to put them, or staff to support them all • Operations & Budget Committee of the Magellan Council recommendations (not yet approved, but likely to be implemented): • Total of 6 ports (3 on each telescope) supported • Number of instruments available for use be limited to at most 5 facility instruments and 1 probationary or P.I. instrument at any time • Reserve 1 Nasmyth port for probationary or P.I. instruments
What are the Options? • Retire some of the present instruments: e.g., retire PANIC when FourStar is ready • Support some instruments in campaign mode: e.g., f/5 instruments • Limit the suite of instruments supported each semester to 6 • ???
How to Do It? • Finish commissioning present instruments: IMAC & MIKE nearly there, LDSS3 and MagIC close, PANIC & MIKE fibers ?? • Make sure that all instruments currently being built follow the commissioning procedures for facility and P.I. instruments: This will give us a much better idea of the support requirements of each instrument • Come up with a plan which takes into account support requirements and scientific priorities This is a job for the SAC!

What are the First Steps? • Update the “Magellan Instrument Procedures and Policies” (formerly “Magellan Facility Instrument Policy”) • This document has been modified by A. Uomoto to: • Include User instruments (a.k.a. P.I. instruments) • Change relationship between instrument builders and observatory staff from “vendor-customer” to one more akin to “collaborators” • Get the teams currently building Magellan instruments to follow all of the steps in the policy
