  1. Revisiting revision Rebecca Lillington Cirencester Deer Park School

  2. Aims of the presentation • To identify the importance of student voice in getting revision right and fully preparing pupils for the revision process • To highlight the value of target setting and assessment for learning to help pupils achieve their target grades. • To share the outcomes of the work and hopefully the good practice.

  3. Geography at Cirencester Deer Park School • Large 11-16 comprehensive school. • The OFTSED inspection of May 2010 graded the school as Outstanding. • Like other foundation subjects Geography becomes optional at GCSE. • The number of pupils opting for GCSE Geography is high.

  4. Why revisit revision? 4 schools work in Partnership as part of the LEPP – Cirencester Deer Park School, Kingshill School, Gloucester CTC, Brockworth Enterprise school. Partnership Level Creating a model of good practice for other departments in the school to follow and a central revision point for the students School Level Changing GCSE specification – Developing best practice with a tried and tested course in preparation for supporting the new GCSE. Departmental Level

  5. Getting started – Pupil voice • A GCSE class of 24 students completed the questionnaire. • Pupils completed 5 questions on: • Target setting • Confidence with revision • Strategies used in revision • The efficiency of these revision strategies • Barriers to revision. • Pupils also evaluated and commented on • The school produced revision guide. • A published revision guide

  6. The outcomes of the questionnaires – What the pupils want • More exemplar answers included in student exercise books along with top tips throughout due to their popularity as a revision resource. • Provision of past papers and mark schemes • Appears to be a contradiction between what the students see as effective in gaining the knowledge and skills and what they are actually doing. This suggests that students need to revise smarter . • The departmental Geography revision guide needs to be redesigned taking into account the recommendations of the students. There needs to be a greater use of colour, clearer sections, exemplar answers and more diagrams. • Time is the biggest barrier to revision and the results identified the importance of providing a structured revision programme and also for revision sessions to be built into curriculum time.

  7. Teachers top tips – During the exam

  13. Redesigning the revision process – Revision timetable • Structured revision programme. • Regular sessions . • Pupils able to target the areas of the syllabus which need improvement. • Opportunities to practice past papers and develop revision technique in addition to just covering content. • Extended revision sessions in the three weeks preceding the exam.

  14. Redesigning the revision process – Revision activities • Games – Articulate, double puzzles, quizzes • Past papers – model answers, peer assessments and self assessments • DVD – Watching key programmes linked to the course • Creating materials for peers – Podcasts and powerpoints • Computer based revision – Bitesize, Geography intranet

  15. Redesigning the revision process – Revision packs Highlighter pen A brown paper bag Overview of how to use IAWT to help revision. Blank revision cards Case study cards Case study cards What the examiner expects you to know Course book key pages What the examiner expects you to know

  16. The outcomes • Very much a case of work in progress • Response from the pupils so far has been very positive • There will be further evaluation after the exam results in the summer. • The model will be shared across all four schools, hopefully as a template for success.
