A catalytic converter is the part on a car that deals with the emissions and it's main aim is to reduce pollution. A smell of rotten eggs is always a big sign there is an issue with the catalytic converter, not a pleasant smell at all! 4. If you can here a rattle in the exhaust the chance is it is either the heat shield or the catalytic converter
5. Tap test, you can tap the catalytic converter and then tap the still exhaust pipe next to it, if they sound the same your catalytic converter is empty and will need replacing.
