  2. What is GAP? Based on the FDA 1998 document: Guidance for Industry: Guide to Minimize Microbial Food Safety Hazards for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables It is not a regulation or law; only guidelines so it isn’t enforceable {yet}

  3. What is GAP? A producer/farm level approach to food safety Prevents food borne illness by minimizing the chance of contamination on the farm of fresh fruit and vegetables.

  4. In Kentucky GAP Training • A cooperative effort involving Department for Public Health, University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension, and KDA resulted in the development of a GAP Training Class. • Is entirely voluntary for producers

  5. In Kentucky The Agent’s Role Utilizes county level Cooperative Extension Agents as primary trainers of the producer.

  6. SHOULD I BE OFFERING GAP TRAININGS? Farmers Markets • Samples of fruits and vegetables {KFB Certified Roadside Markets} • WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program • Some farmers markets require all vendors have a GAP training certificate.

  7. SHOULD I BE OFFERING GAP TRAININGS? Produce auctions • At least 2 produce auctions in the state require producers have a GAP Training Certificate Produce wholesalers • Some wholesalers require GAP Training Certificates

  8. SHOULD I BE OFFERING GAP TRAININGS? Farm to School, or other institutions • GAP training may be required by some school systems

  9. SHOULD I BE OFFERING GAP TRAININGS? Third Party GAP Audits If a farm is seeking a GAP Audit {3rd party certification}, they must have participated in some sort of GAP training.

  10. What does it mean that a farm/producer is GAP Certified? The entity has passed an independent, third party audit to verify they are using proper procedures and maintaining records indicating such. NOT offered through KDA!!!! I only assist growers preparing for an audit.

  11. What’s the status of GAP & Senate Food Safety Bill FDA GAP regulation release have been pushed back to mid 2011. FDA Food Safety Modernization Act S510 will not be acted on until after the election. Amendments have included exempting direct sales to consumers, and restaurants.
