The session at the Nordisk Kongres on May 15, 2009, focuses on the complexities faced by medical students in general practice. Led by Merete Jorgensen and Klaus Witt from the University of Copenhagen, the discussion highlights the challenges, such as interpreting patient symptoms that often lack clear diagnoses, variations in disease prevalence, and the necessity for respect towards general medicine. The educators aim to clarify core values in general practice and explore effective teaching methods that integrate biomedical knowledge with practical skills, intuition, and patient-centered care.

Why could it difficult to be a studentat general medicine? • Patients come with symptoms, not well defined illnesses. • Patients present their symptoms according to the meaning it gives the person • The prevalence of diseases is different from what the students have experienced in hospitals • There might be several ways to deal with a problem
To create respect for general medicin we……… • have to be able to clarify the core issues and values of general medicine to the student • have to clarify how we combine bio-medical education, tacit knowledge, patter recognititon and intuition when handling our patients.
How on earth should we be able to do that? The questions that arose were : • How much should a basic doctor know about general practice? • Could we as teachers agree about this issue? • Which kind of teaching would promote the aims we agreed on?
