  2. Introduction • Melanie Baggao • Bachelor’s Degree in Intercultural Studies and Elementary Education from Biola University • Enjoys traveling, reading, and gardening • 8 years of teaching-6th grade LA/SS each year • 7 years at LCMS • 6th grade is my favorite grade to teach!

  3. CLASSROOM STANDARDS • Be in your seat and ready to learn when class begins. You must have your notebook, pencils, pens, paper, books & homework ready. • Be an involved listener and cooperative learner!

  4. Classroom standards (cont’d) • RESPECT school property & property of others!!!!!! • Treat others as you want to be treated: *No foul language; teasing or NAME CALLING *Keep hands, feet & ALL objects to yourself *Speak respectfully & encourage others

  5. Classroom standards (cont’d) • ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD, GUM, CANDY OR SEEDS AT ANY TIME IN THE CLASSROOM!!!!! • CELL PHONES must be turned off and kept inside of your backpack from 8am to the last bell of the day.

  6. CONSEQUENCES**Please note that ALL detentions will be Nutrition/Lunch & after school** • Verbal Warning, name on board • 1st mark- name in detention book + 15 mins. Detention • 2nd mark - name in detention book + 30 mins. Detention with possible phone call

  7. CONSEQUENCES (part 2) • 3rd mark - name in detention book + 30 mins. Detention with Parent Phone call • 4th mark REPEAT OFFENDERS: Teacher, Parent, Student conference to determine more effective consequences. Possible suspension

  8. CONSEQUENCES (part 3) • SEVERE CLAUSE: Any student who defies the authority of a teacher or instructional aide,OR causes OR threatens to cause bodily harm to another student, will be suspended from class immediately.

  9. Tele Parent • Any time a student serves time in detention for behavior or incomplete/missing homework, you will get a call from Tele Parent. • ALL parents should have received a call regarding the Summer Reading Project a couple weeks ago, If you did not, please let me know.

  11. Regular Language Arts Homework Assignments • Reading Log every day (15 minutes of reading at home) • Students need to read according to their ZPD • Reading Logs are collected every two weeks. • The next Reading Log is due NEXT Wed. 9/28.

Regular Language Arts Class work Assignments • LA Warm Ups: • Done at the beginning of the period while taking out HW. • Five questions plus two A and B questions on the back. • Half sheets of paper • Collected once a week • AR Quizzes and Star Tests • STAR tests determine Reading Level • Quizzes are taken after each book read • Library Day • Every two weeks starting 9/29 • Students need to choose an AR book according to their ZPD

Regular Social Studies Homework Assignments • Current Events due once a month • Students need to find an article about their city(local), state, nation, or world • The article (from the internet, newspaper, or a magazine) must be attached to the current event form • No news on sports, weather reports, or celebrities. • THE NEXT CURRENT EVENT IS DUE NEXT FRI. 9/30

Warm Ups • 3-4 questions answered in complete sentences • Collected after every 10 are completed • SS Notebook • Contains class notes, maps, and homework for each unit. • Scissors and Glue Stick are needed every week • Student turns in their notebook after every unit, about every 3-5 weeks

  20. Team Homework Policy Late Homework will not be accepted unless student is absent. If your child is absent, it is student’sresponsibility to check the homework board or ask the teacher for the missed assignments. The student will then have the following 2 days to make up the missing work. Miss Baggao WILL take late projects and Reading Logs for partial credit. **We are available daily, after school, to assist with assignments.**

  22. LA and SS Grading • Homework 20% • Test 30%** • AR/Reading Logs 15% • Projects/Quizzes 25% • Participation/ Effort 10% **Common Assessments and Benchmarks will make up HALF of the Academic Grade and will not be counted towards the above Achievement Grade. **

  24. Grades • A = 100-94% • A- = 93-90% • B+ = 89-86% • B = 85-83% • B- = 82-80% • C+ = 79-76% • C = 75-73% • C-= 72-70% • ** At the Middle School, C- and below is considered non-passing

  25. Returned Work Reports • Every 3-4 weeks, graded work will be returned to students in the form of a packet. • Parent signature is required • Please save all graded work each trimester just in case of a discrepancy with grades

  26. Our Class • Your student is placed in this class with other Gifted, High Achieving, and Creative Learners • Quality over quantity • Organization is half the battle in 6th grade and throughout middle school • Just getting A’s on tests is not going to “cut it”

My goals for this year… • Teach the CA state standards for English-Language Arts and Social Studies • Help train my students to be lifelong readers and lifelong learners • Help encourage and foster the unique giftedness of each student • To partner with each student and their family as a team for success in 6th grade-a strong foundation for the middle school experience!
