  1. Training plus studies Twice as gooda future!

  2. Competition for talents (1) Data and facts of the labor market • The number of graduates from universities and technical colleges is declining altogether. • The number of students, in particular in technical subjects of the future, is not sufficient for meeting the overall economic demand: there will be a shortage in young talented staff. • The share of the working population will drop considerably in the next ten years. • At the same time, the need for university graduates and the demands to be satisfied by future managers will be rising. • Job advertisements are no longer sufficient when it comes to attracting junior staff: unusual and orginal recruitment initiatives by companies are required.

  3. Competition for talents (2) The situation in the RWE Group and possibilities to attract and keep young talented engineers • A large share of the graduates from technical universities and colleges are recruited by Siemens. • Only very few of the graduates applying for trainee jobs at RWE are engineers. • Contrary to the number of students in engineering courses, the demand for engineers continues to grow altogether. • Problem: Already at the beginning of the main course of studies, other companies conclude "preliminary agreements" with students. • Solution approach at RWE Net: TrainingplusStudies

  5. How will we meet the demand? • Offer to especially qualified and motivated apprentices to do a graduate course at a technical college in addition to vocational training(Training plusStudies), • Degree: Dipl.-Ing. (FH), • Studies parallel to 3.5 years of vocational training for becoming • an energy electronics technician, • a mechatronics technician, • 2 x 3 months= 6 months of college/year • Winter semester: Oct -> Nov -> (Dec) -> Jan • Summer semester: Apr -> May ->June, • 2 x 3 months= 6 months per year of practical training (vocational training)

  6. This is twice as good a future :Training plus Studies Essential advantages • Training plus Studiesis a modern type of education which is very much in demand among highly motivated students. • Preparing theses on subjects from the company is an advantage for both the students and the company. • The risk of appointing the students to a wrong position after completing Training plus Studiescan be excluded after a period of 3.5 years.

  7. The technical collegeGeorg Agricola zu Bochum is the optimum partner for Training plus Studies • Private technical college with state recognition/sponsoring organization:DMT(Deutsche Montan Technologie), • Small college with intensive support and short study period, • Close contact to energy industry in the Ruhr region, • Certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001, • Own student dormitory for 200 students and cafeteria, • Located conveniently in the Ruhr region - central location in city center of Bochum.

  9. Outline conditions (1) • Recruitment of 20 to 40 apprentices from all management companies and all locations, • Selection of apprentices by a special recruitment procedure, • Particular requirements to be met by applicants: • School-leaving certificate with university entrance qualification with overall grade of 3.0 or better or above-average achievements in mathematical/science subjects, • Performance-oriented and performance-motivated (test and interview), • Military/alternative service done or not liable for military/alternative service.

  10. Outline conditions (2) • If studies are discontinued, vocational training is continued • Examples( e.g. vocational academies in Baden-Württemberg) demonstrate that 3.5 years of Training plus Studies are possible. • The course schedule at the technical college is so tight that no time is lost. • The content of the vocational school subjects is taught at the technical college ,general subjects are not taught. • The candidates are specifically selected.

  11. Outline conditions (3) • There is no guarantee for employment - but no commitment clauses, either. • The course at the technical college is highly acknowledged, graduates of dual courses have excellent career opportunities • Remuneration: During training> Training allowance After training> Skilled workers' wage After studies> Junior engineer • Applicants: Currently, the 2nd recruitment procedure is under way

  12. Requirements to be met by in-company training • The training must be aimed at achieving professional authority to act • The training considers future operational areas of engineers • The training must be related to job practice • Basics are conveyed in existing training methods • Qualified training contents are conveyed within the scope of company assignments • Training is conducted according to uniform standards/objectives • Training is conducted according to modular structures (time/contents) • Continuous coordination between RWE and the technical college(time/contents)

  13. Profile of graduates Training plus studies focuses on training an engineer with immediate professional aptitude ,who knows the important basics of mathematics and science and focuses on a practice-oriented ability to solve problems .As a graduate, he or she already is aware of the problems and working life of our industry. He or she is able to use the existing technology with a focus on the relevant problems and efficiently, and fulfil his or her tasks in a cost-effective manner. He or she completed parts of the studies in practice ,the qualification jobs serve the purpose of solving an engineering-related problem in the company .Core elements of the studies are application-focused ,but at the same time well-founded in science.
