  3. Who We Are • Wayne Osborn, Teacher-Librarian • Nancy Bennett, 2nd Grade Teacher • Brian Fligner, Washington Reading Corps, Evergreen State College

  4. Why Digital Storytelling with Claymation? • This was taught during an after school educational technology program. Nancy and Wayne were originally going to teach storytelling via Powerpoint and Photostory, but with Brian’s expertise in animation, decided to include a claymation component as well. We learned as much as the students!

  5. How did we choose the students? • With help from our counselor,we targeted students who weren’t necessarily experiencing academic success in the classroom. Of our eight students, five fit into this category.

  6. Benefits of Digital Storytelling • “Digital storytelling brings with it solid educational reasons for its use. There are many benefits for students and teachers in learning and teaching using this technology. Many of the new strategies teachers employ in the classroom are easily incorporated into digital storytelling lessons. When students create digital stories, they are involved in most or all of the following skills:

  7. Benefits of Digital Storytelling • Student becomes an active, participatory learner • Student uses organizational skills • Student participates in an alternative learning style • Student performs authentic tasks • Student participates in peer coaching activities

Benefits of Digital Storytelling • Student uses higher-level thinking skills in evaluation, application, and synthesis of ideas • Student becomes a communicator of knowledge to others • Student becomes a designer of effective and stimulating communication • Student utilizes inquiry-based learning

  9. Benefits of Digital Storytelling • Student participates in instructional change • Student integrates technology into curriculum projects • Student participates in peer review • Student uses authentic project-based outcomes to share their work
