  1. Welcome to the Ahern! You have entered House B, home of Mrs. Blanchard, Mr. V, and temporarily, your child

  2. During this Open House we will: • Discuss our expectations • Give a brief overview of subject material • Explain our grading policy • Inform you of our after school help sessions • Encourage frequent communication

  3. We expect students to: • Come to school and class prepared to learn • Take responsibility for their actions • Treat others with the respect they deserve • Work cooperatively with students and adults • Take pride in their work

  4. ELA • ELA consists of reading and writing in the workshop model. Students will be reading and writing independently quite a bit and receiving regular feedback on their progress. • Please remind your child to read every single night for at least twenty minutes. We have a student anthology which can be accessed online, but it is only used occasionally. Spelling will sometimes consist of whole-class lists and will be different for each child at other times.

  5. Social Studies (3x per cycle) Topics include: • Geography • Early Western Civilizations (Aztec, Maya, Inca) • European Exploration • Early English Settlements • Colonial Life • American Revolution • Constitution

  6. Math • 9 x per cycle • Hardcover Student Handbook should stay at home for your reference. • Workbook: Lesson Activity Book (LAB) • Worksheets (keep until end of chapter to help review for quizzes and tests) • Place value, decimals, fractions, geometry, problem solving strategies.

  7. Science • 6 x per cycle • Starting the year with PLANTS • Discovery Works Unit • Rocks and Minerals, Simple Machines, Matter, Environment and Life (invertebrates) • Sangari

  8. Grades • Letter grades are new and can cause stress • Elementary school is VERY different-anticipating certain letter grades can lead to increased anxiety • Each child begins each of the 4 terms with an “A+”, and they have the opportunity to maintain that throughout the quarter

  9. More on grades • Children are expected to turn in homework on time • Family comes first, and there are legitimate reasons why homework cannot be completed, but having a soccer game is not one of them • Any homework not turned in on time will be accepted the following day (and subsequent days), but full credit will not be received.

  10. Taking Tests • Students are given about a week’s notice before a test • Although we are not big “pop quiz” people, these smaller assessments can occur at any time • Retakes will be given for tests but not for quizzes Study!!! Don’t be afraid to ask questions!!!

  11. Retake Procedure • “If at first you don’t succeed…” • Each child will be given an opportunity to “toss out their original test” and receive a new and improved score if they: • Get the original test signed by a parent/guardian • Make the corrections to the original assessment • Stay after school for extra help • Stay after school again or give up a recess to take another test on the same material

  12. More on the Retake Procedure • Term 1 = Anyone below the "A" range can retake and only the 2nd test will countTerm 2 = Anyone below the "B" range can retake and only the 2nd test will countTerm 3 = Anyone below the "B" range can retake, but the two scores will be averagedTerm 4 = Anyone below the "C" range can retake, but the two scores will be averaged

  13. After School • Students are welcome to stay after school on Wednesdays with Mr. V. and Thursdays with Mrs. Blanchard. • These sessions last an hour (2:25-3:25) • Students can take a late bus home, walk, or get picked up by an adult • This is not a punishment-it is an opportunity to get homework done, prepare for an upcoming quiz/test, or use the materials in the classroom

  14. Caring School Communities • Social skills program • Implemented during HOUSE • Homeside Activities involve parents as well…these might go home once a month

  15. Keep in touch! • Please feel free to email us at : vogelgesangc@foxborough.k12.ma.us blanchards@foxborough.k12.ma.us • You can call us: • 508-543-1610 • ext. 106 for Mrs. Blanchard and 108 for Mr. V • Hand-written notes work fine, too

  16. Thank you for listening! Conferences will be held in November the week of Thanksgiving. A notice will be sent home, and you will be able to request an afternoon or evening time slot. See you then!
