3. Recreate the chart There are so many character traits that are mentioned about Chris in this chapter. Write down 3 of them and explain how they were developed in Chris as a young man. Then explain how that character trait was exhibited in Chris in earlier chapters in the book.

4. Showing vs Telling sentences • Readers need to "see" events unfolding, infer tones and attitudes, not have things DESCRIBED to them. Telling statement: Mike was a mean man. Telling statement: She yelled at Timmy, upsetting him. Telling statement: The dog scared me. Showing statement: Mike walked with the rest of us, but always two steps ahead, ensuring "first kicking rights" to any stray dogs coming up to us hoping for a scrap of food. Sometimes he teased them before laying a steel-toed boot to them; this bothered me the most, seeing that small spark of hope in the eyes of the starving mongrels... then hearing the yelp. Showing statement: The rotweiller's low growl exploded into a heart-stopping bark. I jumped backward, knocking the chair over on my way toward the door. As useless as my defense was, I kept my right foot poised for the kick. Showing statement: "Shut up, you freakin' little wimp!" Timmy looked up at his mother, tears taking less than a second to form and roll down his dirty face in streams that tracked both disbelief and desolation.

5. Difference between showing and telling • Take out a clean sheet of paper and tear it in half. Give the other half to your friend. • Using the given picture I want you to write a paragraph in which you describe what’s happening. (hint: use descriptive words that appeal to the 5 senses) • Note: I want you to focus on not using sentences like: The baseball player caught the ball. The baseball player dropped the ball.

Write 2-3 sentences why this poem had an element of being spooky or chilling? 2. Write down 3 words that makes the poem eerie and explain how each word adds to the spooky atmosphere. 3.
