  1. 12th gradeIf you didn’t turn in the “brag Sheet” from Friday please put it on the front table.

  2. Homework for tonight • Read chapter 12 of Into the Wild

  3. Recreate the chart There are so many character traits that are mentioned about Chris in this chapter. Write down 3 of them and explain how they were developed in Chris as a young man. Then explain how that character trait was exhibited in Chris in earlier chapters in the book.

  4. Showing vs Telling sentences • Readers need to "see" events unfolding, infer tones and attitudes, not have things DESCRIBED to them. Telling statement: Mike was a mean man. Telling statement: She yelled at Timmy, upsetting him. Telling statement: The dog scared me. Showing statement: Mike walked with the rest of us, but always two steps ahead, ensuring "first kicking rights" to any stray dogs coming up to us hoping for a scrap of food. Sometimes he teased them before laying a steel-toed boot to them; this bothered me the most, seeing that small spark of hope in the eyes of the starving mongrels... then hearing the yelp. Showing statement: The rotweiller's low growl exploded into a heart-stopping bark. I jumped backward, knocking the chair over on my way toward the door. As useless as my defense was, I kept my right foot poised for the kick. Showing statement: "Shut up, you freakin' little wimp!" Timmy looked up at his mother, tears taking less than a second to form and roll down his dirty face in streams that tracked both disbelief and desolation.

  5. Difference between showing and telling • Take out a clean sheet of paper and tear it in half. Give the other half to your friend. • Using the given picture I want you to write a paragraph in which you describe what’s happening. (hint: use descriptive words that appeal to the 5 senses) • Note: I want you to focus on not using sentences like: The baseball player caught the ball. The baseball player dropped the ball.

  6. The Listeners by Walter de la Mare • Since I’m trying to get you to use more imagery in your writing, let’s see how it’s used in writing. • On the back of your paper write sight, touch, sound, taste, smell in which you have space in between each word because you will be copying sentences. • I’ll read a poem to you and your job is to find 2 examples of each of the five senses.

  7. The Listeners "Is there anybody there?" said the Traveller,Knocking on the moonlit door; And his horse in the silence champed the grassOf the forest's ferny floor; And a bird flew up out of the turret,Above the Traveller's head:And he smote upon the door again a second time;"Is there anybody there?" he said. But no one descended to the Traveller; No head from the leaf-fringed sillLeaned over and looked into his grey eyes,Where he stood perplexed and still. But only a host of phantom listenersThat dwelt in the lone house thenStood listening in the quiet of the moonlightTo that voice from the world of men:Stood thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair, That goes down to the empty hall,Hearkening in an air stirred and shakenBy the lonely Traveller's call. And he felt in his heart their strangeness,Their stillness answering his cry,While his horse moved, cropping the dark turf,'Neath the starred and leafy sky;For he suddenly smote on the door, evenLouder, and lifted his head:--"Tell them I came, and no one answered,That I kept my word," he said.Never the least stir made the listeners,Though every word he spakeFell echoing through the shadowiness of the still houseFrom the one man left awake:Ay, they heard his foot upon the stirrup,And the sound of iron on stone,And how the silence surged softly backward,When the plunging hoofs were gone.

  8. 9th grade Please put the starters for the week on the front table if you did not do so Friday. If you did not turn in your survival guide that also needs to be on the front table. The final draft of your essay is due tomorrow typed.

  9. Starter 1 Directions: Copy each sentence. Underline the verb and circle the adverb. (answers how, when, where an action takes place) 1. Yesterday, they played a game. 2. The truck grumbled loudly. 3. We will go to the concert soon. 4. Jen waited patiently for the computer to load. 5. Kayla finally arrived at the park. WE WILL HAVE A TEST COVERING ADVERBS THIS FRIDAY

  10. The Listeners by Walter de la Mare pg 123 • Please take out a clean sheet of paper and create the following chart using the whole paper. • I’ll read a poem to you and your job is to find 2 examples of each of the five senses. SIGHT TOUCH The Listeners SMELL SOUND TASTE

  12. Questions about “The Listeners” Answer each question on the back of your paper in a complete sentence (incorporate the question and the answer together). 1. Write 2-3 sentences why this poem had an element of being spooky or chilling? 2. Write down 3 words that makes the poem eerie and explain how each word adds to the spooky atmosphere. 3. Write down 2 questions that you believe the author left out that would have made the poem more understandable. Speculate: What are the answers to each of those questions? 4. Describe who the traveler is and why he came to the building. 5. Describe who you think the listeners are and why they do not respond to the knocking on their door.
