Emily Bronte • Born: August 20, 1818Thornton, Yorkshire, EnglandDied: December 19, 1848Haworth, Yorkshire, England • The daughter of a Anglican minister • Mother died when she was 2 of cancer • The fifth child, or six children, born into the Bronte family • Emily's education was provided at home by her father • Emily worked as a governess and a schoolteacher. ````````````

Emily Bronte Continued… • After Emily learned that Char­lotte and Anne have also written poems, they published their first book called “Poems by Cu­rer, Ellis and Acton Bell” • Bronte's writing style depicts emotion, energy and violence. These traits are all illustrated in her only published novel, Wuthering Heights. • The Bronte sister’s did a lot of poems together • She expresses her private intimate thoughts in her poems. • Bronte died of consumption on Dec. 19, 1848. Refusing all medical attention, she struggled to perform her household tasks until the end.

  4. “Historical Background” • The Victorian Period revolves around the political career of Queen Victoria. She was crowned in 1837 and died in 1901 (which put a definite end to her political career). A great deal of change took place during this period--brought about because of the Industrial Revolution; so it's not surprising that the literature of the period is often concerned with social reform. • The Period is often divided into two parts: the early Victorian Period (ending around 1870) and the late Victorian Period. • Queen Victoria’s was marked by triumph and tragedies • The Main features were The Industrial Revolution , Free Trade, social conflicts, social reform, Victorian values, religion, the condition of women, and Colonial expansion.

  5. Summary of poem • She is talking about a love interest she had when she was younger. They were in love but then he died. He had been dead for 15 years, and since his death she has never fallen in love with anyone else. Not anyone or anything made her happier than this man did. She had missed him so much that she believed that her happiness was only existent in death with him. She didn't like to think too much about him even after 15 years because she knew that she would fall into the same state of depression that she was in just after he died. She does feel guilty when she, even if it is for one moment, forgets about him or her mind travels elsewhere, because she feels that he may think she no longer cares or loves him but she does and will never forget the love that the love they had for each other.

  6. Literary Devices • In her poem, Emily Bronte use literary devices of rhyme, repetition, and mood to create the setting of her feelings. • The theme is Death and How love can last forever • “Cold in the earth- and deep snow piled above thee” • That is an example of setting the mood..

  7. The theme Continued… • Examples of the theme… • “Far, far removed, cold in the dreary grave!” • “All my life’s bliss is in the grave with thee”

  8. Figurative Language • “Cold in the earth-and the deep snow piled above thee” –Hyperbole • “Severed at last by Time’s all-severing wave?” –Personification, Rhetoric • She uses a lot of imagery such as : “Brown hills” • She uses questions such as “How could I seek the empty world again?

  9. Figurative Language Cont… • Anaphora-successive phrases, clauses, or lines start with the same word or words. "Remembrance," for example, repeats its opening phrase, "Cold in the earth” • Tone-Remembering, hopeless, mourning • Speaker- Person’s who reminiscing on their lost loved one • Mood- Sympathetic

Shift • “But when the days of golden dreams had perished, And even Despair was powerless to destroy ;then did I learn how existence could be cherished, Strengthened, and fed without the aid of joy”. This is a shift in tone because before she was hopeless and her outlook on life was meaningless, but then she realizes that there is some light in the overwhelming darkness.

  11. Poem Interpretation • The poem is saying how the lady is in need of love and how she is starting to forget him. • “Sweet Love of youth, forgive, if I forget thee” • She is saying all her dreams is in the grave with him. • “But, when the days of golden dreams had perished”

Continued… • In her poem, Emily Bronte use literary devices of rhyme, repetition, and mood to create the setting of her feelings. • Mood, theme, figurative language, and other poetic devices helped give this poem a greater meaning. • Remembrance was very detail and some of the devices help spice it up with clarification
