  1. Purdue University Materials Engineering Professor Kevin Trumble, School of Materials Engineering • Goals for this seminar: • Prof. Trumble • Purdue University • Engineering at Purdue • Materials Engineering at Purdue

  2. Professor Kevin Trumble Education: University of Michigan, BS & MS, Materials and Metall. Engineering, 1985 University of California, Santa Barbara, PhD, Materials, 1990 Max-Planck-Institut, Stuttgart, Germany, Post-doctoral 1990-91 Purdue University, 1991- Michigan California Germany Indiana

  3. Professor Kevin Trumble Experience: Purdue University, School of Materials Engineering Assistant Professor 1991 – 1996 Associate Professor 1996 – 2000 Professor 2000 – Research: Materials Processing and Microstructure Casting (pour liquid metal and solidify) Powder (press particles and sinter) Mainly metals and ceramics Dendrite solidification

  4. Professor Kevin Trumble Teaching: Undergraduate courses: Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering Materials Processing Graduate courses: Powder Processing Metallurgy of Steels Currently support 6 PhD students and 1 Postdoc

  5. Purdue University West Lafayette, Indiana (population ~ 65,000) Started 1869, after American civil war “Land-Grant” university = focus on agriculture and mechanics Today ~ 35,000 students (~20% in Engineering fields)

  6. Purdue University Nickname: Boilermakers (= maker of boilers, steam trains) Purdue Pete

  7. Engineering at Purdue One of largest and oldest Engineering university in USA Many famous graduates, including first and last man to walk on the moon All Engineering disciplines: Aerospace, Biomedical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial, Materials, Mechanical, … Engineering Mall

  8. Engineering at Purdue One of largest and oldest Engineering colleges in USA Many famous graduates, including first and last man to walk on the moon All Engineering disciplines: Aerospace, Biomedical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial, Materials, Mechanical, … Engineering Mall Neil Armstrong and Gene Cernan

  9. Engineering at Purdue ~ 8500 students (6200 undergraduates / 2300 graduates) ~ 320 Professors ~ 2000 students start Engineering each year Common first-year program in School of Engineering Education* before starting specific discipline (IE, ME, etc) in year 2, 3 and 4) *first in the world department of Engineering Education

  10. School of Materials Engineering School of Metallurgical Engineering, 1959 School of Materials Engineering, 1973 Currently: 135 BS students 75 MS and PhD students 20 Professors Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering (2007) Aerospace Engineering Materials Engineering Engineering Education

  11. School of Materials Engineering With 200 students and 20 professors, Materials is one of smallest Engineering disciplines at Purdue Materials discipline is small fraction of all Engineering Worldwide ~2% of engineers have Materials degree. Small field, but important because “everything is made of materials”

  12. Break Too fast? Too slow? Questions up to now?

  13. Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Material Classes: Metals, Ceramics, Polymers, Composites Definition of MSE: Structure MSE Properties Processing

  14. Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Material Classes: Metals, Ceramics, Polymers, Composites Definition of MSE: Atom Molecule Crystal Grain Structure MSE Properties Processing

  15. Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Material Classes: Metals, Ceramics, Polymers, Composites Definition of MSE: Atom Molecule Crystal Grain Structure MSE Properties Processing Strength, Density, Conductivity….

  16. Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Material Classes: Metals, Ceramics, Polymers, Composites Definition of MSE: Atom Molecule Crystal Grain Structure MSE Properties Processing Casting, Rolling, Heat Treating…. Strength, Density, Conductivity….

  17. Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Material Classes: Metals, Ceramics, Polymers, Composites Definition of MSE: Atom Molecule Crystal Grain Structure MSE Properties Processing Casting, Rolling, Heat Treating…. Strength, Density, Conductivity…. Applies to all engineering designs, to everything made

  18. Different Types of MSE Programs • Emphasize one class of Material, like Metals or Ceramics • Emphasize Science (fundamental) or Engineering (applied) • Trends: • Combine with larger fields: Mechanical and Materials • Chemical and Materials • 2. General MSE = all classes of Materials

  19. Purdue MSE Program General MSE (Metals, Ceramics, Polymers, Composites) > Bachelor degree (4 years) Students join in Year 2, after First-Year Engineering Special emphasis on materials processing Large amount of MSE laboratory classes - measure properties and microstructure - conduct processing (casting, forming, etc.) Design projects sponsored by Industry

  20. Purdue MSE Curriculum Year 1: First-Year Engineering (Science, Math, Engineering) Year 2: Introduction to MSE Properties Lab Bonding and Crystallography Physical Properties Thermodynamics + continue Science and Math classes

  21. Purdue MSE Curriculum Year 3: Microstructure Lab Heat and Fluid Transport Materials Processing Materials Processing Lab Electrical Properties Mechanical Properties Advanced Materials Electives (3 classes) Year 4: Materials and Process Selection Industry Design Projects (2 semesters) Advanced Materials Electives (3 classes)

  22. Purdue MSE Curriculum Picture Structure Microstructure Lab Bonding and Crystals Properties Lab Thermodynamics Material & Process Selection Heat and Fluids Physical Properties Design Projects Properties Processing Electrical Properties Mechanical Properties Processing Lecture Processing Lab

  23. Typical Class ~ 40 students per class 15 weeks per semester Lecture Class 3 lectures per week, 50 minutes Homework, quizzes, exams (variable) Lab Class 1 lecture per week – prepare for lab 1 lab session per week, 3 hours Students expected to study at least as much time as in class

  24. Summary Purdue Purdue University Purdue Engineering Purdue MSE: School of Materials Engineering Thank you Look forward to discussion of Yantai Nanshan University Materials Engineering program and Introduction to Materials Lectures starting next week

  25. Discussion

  26. Purdue MSE: Graduate (MS and PhD) • 75 graduate students • Admitted students (~15 per year) are supported on research • Graduate teaching experience is required, includes coursework on teaching (once for MS, twice for PhD) • Main research areas Metal processing, especially casting Atomistic materials science Electroceramics Polymer composites • ~50% international graduate students (largest group, China) • Highly competitive admission
