What is Celiac Disease? • A digestive disease that interferes with the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine • Cannot tolerate gluten
What is Celiac Disease? • If a person with celiac disease eats something w/ gluten, the immune system reacts
What is Celiac Disease? • a disease of malabsorption • an abnormal immune reaction to gluten
Symptoms of Celiac Disease • varies from person to person • child: symptoms in the digestive system • abdominal bloating and pain • chronic diarrhea • vomiting • constipation • pale, foul-smelling, or fatty stool • weight loss
Symptoms of Celiac Disease • adult symptoms: (less likely to happen in the digestive system) • unexplained iron-deficiency anemia • fatigue • bone or joint pain • arthritis • bone loss or osteoporosis • depression or anxiety • tingling numbness in the hands and feet • seizures • missed menstrual periods • infertility or recurrent miscarriage • canker sores inside the mouth • an itchy skin rash called dermatitis herpetiformis
Causes for Celiac Disease • genetic • triggered after surgery, pregnancy, childbirth, viral infection, or severe emotional stress
How can Celiac Disease be diagnosed? • difficult because some of its symptoms are similar to those of other diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, iron-deficiency anemia caused by menstrual blood loss, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, intestinal infections, and chronic fatigue syndrome
How can Celiac Disease be diagnosed? • Blood Tests - People with celiac disease have higher than normal levels of certain autoantibodies (high levels of anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies) • Intestinal Biopsy (the doctor removes tiny pieces of tissue from the small intestine to check for damage to the villi)
Treatment for Celiac Disease • gluten-free diet - following this diet will stop symptoms, heal existing intestinal damage, and prevent further damage • not eating foods that contain wheat, rye, and barley (grain, pasta, cereal) • buy gluten-free foods • some common household items also contain gluten and should be avoided unless it is mentioned that this item does not have gluten (lipstick, play dough)
Cure for Celiac Disease • No known cure
