  1. Mathematics Interventions • TEMI – Texas Early Mathematics Inventory (Grades K-2) • Moving with Math (Grades 3-12) Carl Juenke, RtI Mathematics Specialist cjuenke@austinisd.org

  2. TEMI

  3. What is TEMI? • Universal screener • Progress monitoring • Intervention curriculum • Skill games for on-level students

  4. Video Introduction • Jot down questions you have right now • Watch video • Cross off questions that are answered by the video

  5. TEMI-PM details • Focuses on skills that are fundamental to broad-based mathematical proficiency • Fundamental number, operations, and quantitative reasoning skills for primary

  6. TEMI-PM Kindergarten • Number Identification (0-20) • Squares appear in an organized grid • 4 answer choices • Students circle the number that shows how many in all • Quantity Recognition • 1 to 6 dots in a cluster • 6 answer choices • Students circle the number that shows how many in all • Magnitude Comparison • Circle the bigger number or both if they are equal • Number sequences • 0-20 • Circle (or fill in) the missing number

  7. TEMI-PM First Grade • Magnitude Comparison • Circle the smaller number or both if they are equal • Number sequences • 0-99 • Circle (or fill in) the missing number • Place Value • Models of 10s and 1s • 4 answer choices • Circle the number that shows how many in all • Addition/Subtraction combinations • Basic facts • Students write the answer

  8. TEMI-PM Second Grade • Magnitude Comparison • Circle the smaller number or both if they are equal • Number sequences • 0-999 • Write the missing number • Place Value • Models of 100s, 10s and 1s • Write the number that shows how many in all • Addition/Subtraction combinations • Basic facts • Students write the answer

  9. Testing Procedure • Teacher does brief demonstration of answering procedure • Students do 30 second practice, ungraded, teacher has chance to check if students understand the instructions • Students do 2 minute assessment

  10. Excel sheet

  11. How to interpret

  12. Video introduction First grade, introduction

  13. What does it look like? Consider the research recommendations we shared above. What elements do you see? First grade Day 1

  14. What is the rest of the class doing • If start in K, by 2 they can roll with it • Use centers to direct skill development • Develop centers in teams to cut down on prep work

  15. Moving with Math Math by Topic

  16. The Moving with Math Learning System A system of assessment and instruction where everything is tied to standards… with proven results!

  17. Who Are We Trying to Reach? Students who are struggling with basic math concepts or have learning gaps and who lack the understanding of essential math concepts necessary for future success.

  18. Math by Topic Frequently used with Tiers 2 and 3 as an RTI curriculum or a classroom resource. Covers grades 1-8 by level and then by topic.

  19. What is Math by Topic Level A: Grades 1-2 AI: Numeration AII: Addition and Subtraction AIII: Fractions, Geometry, and Measurement Level B: Grades 2-3 BI: Numeration, Addition, and Subtraction BII: Multiplication and Division BIII: Fractions, Decimals, and Percent • Level C: Grades 5-6 • CI: Numeration and Whole Numbers • CII: Fractions, Decimals, and Percents • CIII: Geometry and Measurement • Level D: Grades 7-8 • DI: Numeration and Whole Numbers • DII: Fractions and Decimals • DIII: Problem Solving with Percent • DIV: Geometry and Measurement • DV: Pre-Algebra Listed grade levels are a guideline. Teachers must assess student understanding in order to place a student in the proper level.
