  1. Artificial IntelligenceMedical Diagnosis Beth Ubbens

  2. HISTORY • In 1590 Zacharius Jannssen develops first microscope. • New vaccines were developed for different medical conditions, such as anthrax, rabies, typhoid fever, and the chicken pox. • Insulin and penicillin were discovered. • In 1899 Felix Haffman developed aspirin. • In 1952 Paul Zoll develops a pacemaker, then in 1957 the first artificial heart was implanted into a dog. The dog was able to survive for 90 minutes.

  3. Definition • Artificial Intelligence or AI • “The ability of a computer or other machine to perform actions thought to require intelligence. Among these actions are logical deduction and inference, creativity, the ability to make decisions based on past experience or insufficient or conflicting information…” • AI is not a new concept it has been used in different areas like education, businesses, and manufacturing.

  4. Purpose of AI • When a physician cannot diagnosis a clinical problem because it is outside their expertise the physician must then consult a specialist. However, there are time when the specialist is unavailable or the opinion does not come in a timely fashion. • To serve as consultants

  5. Problems with AI • The development of AI techniques will be able to help physicians diagnosis a patient faster, however, the systems still have a lot of kinks to work out. • While these systems are trying to overcome certain obstacles, the programs have not been successful, even though these programs have been unsuccessful many of the problems hindering the creation of a functional and effective artificial intelligence system have been solved.

  6. Problems with AI continued • The programs are unable to deal with the most complex of clinical problems. • Some symptoms are not common or unusual to the specific clinical problems. • Most programs only deal with disorder, however, patients can have more than one disorder affecting them. Therefore, after solving one of the disorders the AI program might completely ignore the other disorder.

  7. Important uses for AI systems • The use of computers in the medical field may result in a reduction in mortality and decrease the amount of time wasted on waiting to see or hear from a specialist. • “The system serves to improve the quality of medical decision-making, increases patient compliance and minimize…medical errors.”

  8. Important uses for AI systems continued • Another result of using computers will be a reduction in cost and less time registering because the hospital attendance can just type in the patient’s ID and then update the records.

  9. Important uses for AI systems continued • With this technology many problems with the making of the prescriptions could be avoided. • AI systems could be beneficial for allowing specialist from around to world to communicate to physician's that are struggling to properly diagnosis a patient.

  10. Telemedicine • With advancements in technology comes different ways to communicate with other doctors. • “Telemedicine is the integration of telecommunications technologies, information technologies, human-machine interface technology, and medical care technologies for the purpose of enhancing health care delivery across space and time.” • One example of this available to the public is webmd.com

  11. Systems • ICHT- developed to decrease child mortality • HERMES- system for chronic liver diseases • Neo-Dat- system for clinical trails • SETH- system for acute drug poisoning • PROVANES- system for critical patients in Anesthesiology • ISS- system to diagnosis sexually transmitted diseases

  12. Opinions • Personally think that the development of artificial intelligence for medical diagnosis is important because it will be a good tool for physicians to use to help diagnosis a patient.
