  3. Vocabulary • Speak to your child as often as possible. • Listen to their responses. • Add to what they have said.

  4. Listening • Listening to environmental sounds. • Listening to music • Listening to stories.

  5. Speaking • Speaking to 1 other person. • Speaking in a small group. • Speaking in a large group.

  6. Rhymes • Nursery rhymes • Make up new verses • Rhyming words

  7. Initial Letter Sounds • Looking at initial letter of your child’s name. • Progress to friends and family. • Initial letter sounds of objects.

  8. Middle Sounds • Look at words with the same middle sound. • Encourage your child to look for letters in their name.

  9. End of Words • Look for sounds at the end of name. • Listen for same sounds at the end of words. E.g. cat, hat, mat, bat.

  10. Segmenting and Blending Segmenting: c a t Blending: c a t

  11. Phonics in Years 1 and 2 • Vowel – a, e, i, o, and u • Consonant – all other letters • CVC words - dog • CVCC words - walk • CCVC words - chip

  12. Year 1 • Tricky words • Words that cannot be sounded out. • E.G. like, my, the, said, they

  13. Year 1 • Begin to build a bank of high frequency words. • I, go, come, look, dog, away, she, mum, went, up, you, day, was etc.

  14. Year 2 • Builds on all that Foundation Stage and Year 1 has done. • Medium frequency words. E.g. swimming, children, birthday, morning and sometimes.

  15. Syllables • Read 2 syllable words • Say the word • Clap each syllable • Lunchbox – lunch/box • Sound talk the first syllable and blend • Then do the same with the second syllable. • Adult says both syllables. • Repeat and then ask the child to join in.

  16. Phonics • Look for spelling patterns – light, night, might • Could, would, should

  17. Phonics • a – ai ay e.g. rain and day • ai usually found in the middle of words. • ay usually found at the end of words • e – ea ee ey e.g. sea, sheep and key • Encourage children to see common spelling patterns by looking at the words.

  18. Suffix • Singing • Find root word – singing • ing, ed, er, est, ful, ly and y

  19. Spelling Rules • If root word ends in an e – drop it! e.g. hope – hoping • If root word ends in a y preceded by a consonant – change it to an i! e.g. baby – babies • If root word ends in a single consonant preceded by a vowel and the suffix begins with a vowel – double the consonant! e.g. shop + ing - shopping

  20. Mnemonics • These are great ways to help spellings! • Could – O U lucky duck • People – people eat orange peel like elephants • Because – big elephants can always understand small elephants.

  21. Even though the phonics programme finishes in Year 2, all these strategies are implemented throughout the school. Thank you
