  1. Lesson 3Overview of Design Standards

  2. Lesson Objectives Upon conclusion, participants should be familiar with the inter-relationship among: • The current UFC 3-310-04, • The 2012 IBC, • ASCE 7-10, • Material standards referenced in the 2012 IBC.

  3. UFC 3-310-04, 1 May 2013 • Replaces UFC 3-310-04 1 MAY 2012 • Direct reference to 2012 IBC, which references ASCE 7-10 • Exceptions: • Some military facilities will require higher standards • Some host nations may require higher standards

  4. UFC 3-310-04 Contents CHAPTER 1 - SEISMIC DESIGN FOR BUILDINGS CHAPTER 2 - 2012 IBC MODIFICATIONS FOR SEISMIC DESIGN OF DoD BUILDINGS CHAPTER 3 - ALTERNATE DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR RC IV STRUCTURES CHAPTER 4 - DESIGN FOR ENHANCED PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: RC V

  5. UFC 3-310-04 Contents APPENDIX A – REFERENCES APPENDIX B - GUIDANCE FOR SEISMIC DESIGN OF NONSTRUCTURAL COMPONENTS APPENDIX C - MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL COMPONENT CERTIFICATION

  6. UFC 3-310-04 • UFC 3-310-04 adopts the 2012 IBC • Lists modifications to the provisions of the 2012 IBC • The 2012 IBC adopts by reference extensive portions of ASCE 7-10 • UFC 3-310-04 modifies some sections in ASCE 7-10 2-1613 EARTHQUAKE LOADS IBC or ASCE 7 section number and title UFC Chapter

  7. Chapter 2: 2012 IBC Modifications for Seismic Design of DoD Buildings An example section number in this chapter is 2-1603.1.5 or 2-13.1.2. The first number, 2, refers to Chapter 2 of this UFC. 1603.1.5 refers to 2012 IBC Section 1603.1.5, and 13.1.2 refers to ASCE 7-10 Section 13.1.2.

  8. 2012 IBC Sets some basic requirements, but mostly cites structural design standards by reference.

  9. ASCE 7-10 • 3rd Printing • Errata incorporated • Supplement No.1 included • New, expanded seismic commentary included • ASCE 7-05 typeface and layout restored

  10. ASCE 7-10 • Developed by ASCE-SEI using ANSI standard consensus process • Publication cycle varies (1988, 1993, 1995, 1998, 2002, 2005, 2010) • Chapter 23 includes listing of seismic design reference documents • Errata – go to www.seinstitute.org & click on publications • Next edition of ASCE 7 will be dated 2016

ASCE 7-10 Chapter 14 Material Specific Design and Detailing • 14.1 – Steel • 14.2 – Concrete • 14.3 – Composite Steel and Concrete • 14.4 – Masonry • 14.5 – Wood DO NOT USE • 2012 IBC does not adopt Chapter 14 by reference; it includes the same but updated information in its chapters dealing with the materials of construction

  16. 2012 IBC Section 102.4.1: Conflicts 102.4.1 Conflicts. Where conflicts occur between provisions of this code and referenced codes and standards, the provisions of this code shall apply.

  17. 2012 IBC Section 102.4.2: Provisions in Referenced Codes and Standards 102.4.2 Provisions in referenced codes and standards. Where the extent of the reference to a referenced code or standard includes subject matter that is within the scope of this code or the International Codes listed in Section 101.4, the provisions of this code or the International Codes listed in Section 101.4, as applicable, shall take precedence over the provisions in the referenced code or standard.

  18. Chapter 35 Referenced Standards This chapter lists the standards that are referenced in various sections of this document. The standards are listed herein by the promulgating agency of the standard, the standard identification, the effective date and title, and the section or sections of this document that reference the standard. The application of the referenced standards shall be as specified in Section 102.4.

  19. Structural Steel AISC 360-10 AISC 341-10

  20. Structural Steel • Can ignore AISC 341 (Seismic Provisions) in Seismic Design Categories B, C if R = 3 is used • Seismic Provisions required for all other situations • Special, Intermediate, Ordinary Moment Resisting Frames • Special, Ordinary Concentrically Braced Frames • Eccentrically Braced Frames • Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames • Steel Plate Shear Walls • Composite Steel and Concrete Systems

  21. Cold Formed Steel

  22. Cold Formed Steel Lateral design standard covers • Diaphragms and walls sheathed with structural wood panels • Walls sheathed with light gage steel sheet • Walls braced with diagonal steel straps
