Highly motivated
Demonstrates intellectual accomplishment
4. There are three levels at WSU: University Honors Scholar
General Studies Honors Scholar
Departmental Honors Scholar
5. University Honors For a student to graduate with University Honors the first step is to meet 2 of the 3 criteria:
Admitted as Freshman with 3.25 in High School
Graduated in top 10% of their class
Scored at or above the 90th percentile on ACT (27) or the SAT (1300)
6. University Honors And the student must do all of the following:
Complete 6 Honors courses with As/Bs (can be in lieu of general education courses)
Complete two interdisciplinary UH400 seminars with As/Bs
Complete the Departmental Honors program in their major
7. General Studies Honors: Now a student can graduate with General Studies Honors by
Completing the 8 course requirement same as for University Honors and
Graduating with minimum GPA of 3.5*
*effective for students starting Fall 2006
8. Departmental Honors
The third manner in which a student might graduate with honors is called Departmental Honors. To achieve this the student must:
Complete all requirements of their major
and
Departmental specific requirements
9. Departmental Honors Nursing Specific Requirements
The Nursing Departmental Honors Program is designed to meet the needs of outstanding nursing students. Entry into this program is based upon academic performance during the student's first three years.
Qualification: Min Cum GPA 3.2 in middle of junior year
Most eligible students will receive a letter from the Office for Student Affairs (CONH) during the quarter prior to taking the Nursing Research course (NUR 304) inviting them to participate
10. Criteria for Departmental Honors in Nursing Must complete all of the following:
Honor Section of 304 Nursing Research Class Initiate Review of Literature (1 credit hour)
NUR 498 Honors Project Proposal (2 credit hours)
NUR 499 Honors Project (3 credit hours)
11. Honor Section of 304 Nursing Research Initiate Review of Literature (1 credit hour)
Special syllabus for 304H on student web page (at least 20 hours of independent work)
Literature grid and paper on topic for project
Evaluated by 304 faculty
Select possible topic for project
Meet with possible faculty advisor
Sign contract with advisor who will work student in 498.
12. NUR 498 Honors Project Proposal (2 credit hours) Work with a faculty advisor to generate a written proposal for project.
Proposals average about 15 pages in length.
A student undertaking this should anticipate doing approximately 60 hours of independent work.
13. NUR 499 Honors Project (3 credit hours) The departmental honors student implements the project and
Can do all in one quarter or across several quarters.
Then writes up a final paper on project. Often the student also will make a presentation of the project

ANSWER: While it is not a requirement it definitely is an asset when applying to highly competitive programs. In addition, the level of work you do in an honors project will help you prepare to comparable demands in graduate school.

Can be inducted as undergrad or grad student OR as practicing nurse
Undergraduates must have at least 3.0 GPA and be in top 35% of class

ANSWER: As you saw earlier, the term honors is used in many different contexts in a university. When students graduate also they can be recognized just for academic achievement. When a student graduates with academic achievement or distinction, the following terms are written on their diploma based on their overall GPA.

Magna Cum Laude (GPA > 3.6)
Summa Cum Laude (GPA > 3.8)
The GPA that this is based on is a composite of your GPA at WSU and all other grades at any other institutions you might have attended prior to attending WSU.
