  4. February 1964 • February 9—The Beatles appear on the Ed Sullivan Show

  5. March 1964 • March 8—Malcolm X separates himself from the Nation of Islam

  6. June 1964 • June 21—three civil rights workers are murdered in Mississippi by segregationist law enforcement officials (bodies are not found until August)

  7. July 1964 • July 2—Civil Rights Act bans discrimination based on color, race, nationality, religion, or sex.

  8. July 1964 • July 31—Ranger 7 sends back the first close-up pictures of the moon

  9. August 1964 • August 5—Gulf of Tonkin incident leads to the use of US ground troops in Vietnam in 1965.

  10. August 1964 • August 24-27—Democratic National Convention nominates LBJ as its presidential candidate and Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota as his vice-presidential running mate.
