  5. Who are the different TYPES OF peoplethat participate in sport? • Think to yourself? • Write down on the back of your worksheet ALL the TYPES of people you think participate in SPORT – ONLY USE THE TOP HALF of the paper!!! • TYPES of people: • Ethnic Minorities • Retired People/OAP • Families with Young Children • Single Parents • Children • Teenagers • Disabled • Unemployed • Economically Disadvantaged • Working Singles/Couples

  6. Why might these people not want to participate? • Put yourself in the shoes of all of the TYPES of people mentioned? • Why wouldn't’t you want to TAKE part in sport if you were one of those PEOPLE? • Write down 3-4 Ideas on a post it note ON YOUR OWN and stick them on the board • DISCUSS

  7. Why might these people not want to participate? • Employment Time (Not much time available) • Work Restrictions • Family Commitment (Women still seen as bringing up the family) • Disposable Income (Cant afford participation costs) • Accessibility (Transport not available/Disabled Access) • Lack of role models (few ethnic role models/females) • Provision of activities (limited on offer) • Awareness of activities (what's actually going on) • Portrayal of gender issues by the media (mainly men shown on TV i.e. football also presenters)

  8. Can you think of any solutions for these people so they can participate • So what can we do to help people get back into sport? • On the back of your worksheet I want you to bullet point a SOLUTION for each of the previous reasons why people DON’T get involved • For example: • Employment Time – Solution: Attending sessions at lunch during work or in the evenings or weekends. Targeted for full time workers.

  9. SOLUTIONS TO BARRIERS • Provision • Promotion • Access

  10. SOLUTIONS TO BARRIERS • Provision (what to put on and when) • Programme sessions for use by different user groups (e.g. wheelchair basketball) • Providing appropriate activities for user groups (e.g. teenagers do not want to play bowls) • Planning of times to suit different user groups (e.g. for parents with young children, mid morning after school run)

  11. SOLUTIONS TO BARRIERS • Promotion (advertise it) • Targeted promotion (e.g. advertising in places where target users will look i.e. Facebook for teenagers) • Using role models to encourage participation among different user groups • Initiatives aimed at promoting participation and inclusion (e.g. FREE swimming for under 16’s and over 60’s)

  12. SOLUTIONS TO BARRIERS • Access (Can people get to it) • Access to FACILITIES (e.g. transport if in country side or wheelchair ramps for disabled) • Access to equipment (e.g. a hoist for swimming pool access) • Sensible Pricing (e.g. reduction of charges for unemployed people or young children)

  13. TASK - RECAP • Quick fire questions • What are the TYPE of people who take part in sport • What are the TYPES of barriers that STOP people from taking part? • What SOLUTIONS can we come up with to help them go back to sport? • What does PROVISION/PROMOTION/ACCESS MEAN?
